I wouldn't buy into the hereditary sales pitch, Today's doctors give people what they want: An excuse and a pill to make you feel better.

Those numbers are serious, been down this road. For me I went on mediation temporarily to hopefully and thankfully avoid having a stroke, then a change in lifestyle and after a year I've weaned off the BP meds at my indoctrinated care MD's disapproval and my NMD approval and guidance.

It can be done but I wouldn't wait for a lifestyle change to take effect you may not be alive to see it!

Like so many others said take it seriously!

I am you surprised you haven’t a kidney stone yet with that low of a water intake and that high milk intake .
You’re not the first person to say that. I drink a lot of Gatorade. I don’t know if that helps. Well I mean I know it’s not good but

So good job in getting a bp monitor on the way so you can get a good baseline of where you're actually at and if you've got a small or a bigger problem.
There's plenty of salt advice here already and that's pretty easy to implement.
Next, if I were in your boots; I'd consider getting a Coronary Calcium Score scan done -- it will literally tell you what the best plan for treatment will be (diet or agressive drugs).
It's basically an MRI of your heart and they score its health based on the amount of calcium built up in certain areas (you want to be under 100 :) )
Some imaging clinics will do this without a Dr referral and it's not too expensive ($150-$400).
Wife and I did this at a hospital in MX as walk ins - just out of curiosity (I'm 64 and she's 63). $400 for both and it's pretty interesting.

Vic. You should have great insurance thru the Union. Find a primary doctor that is in network and schedule a physical with blood work. I do it once a year with other tests.

I’m on the high blood pressure list too.
Sucks
Gatorade is high in sodium
Coconut water is good .
And salad dressing another high sodium item . You have to pick the right one.

Your target MAX for sodium intake should be 1500 mg / day.

That's hard to do eating food with taste. I figured a turkey sammich on wheat bread with mustard would be pretty clean...fucking yellow mustard has 100mg of sodium per serving, which is about 2 squirts.

The mediteranian diet is something to look into...lots of amazing flavors with not of lot bad shit in it. I'm sorta fucked right now because the wife (the cook) is laid up for the next 4 months or so and I've gotta fend for myself, so I just kinda eat what's easy and when I hit that point on sodium / cholesteral intake that I don't wanna go past, I just don't eat anymore that day, but this is a new situation so I'll adapt to eating better.

Also goes to show you if that’s the sodium numbers from making something at home you can only imagine what’s in fast food or even restaurant food in general.

@BHC Vic hoping your numbers are a little lower today.

A Sourdough Jack (my favorite thing) has 1500mg of sodium....that's a days worth of eating. Some of the read good stuff like a Sirloin bacon burger is 2400+...

But they're not that big, so you need at least 2...for lunch, and maybe some fried with salt on 'em....then whatever you had for Breakfast and dinner....it's not hard to pass 15,000 or even 20K mg a day.

Easy start, order your fries with no salt, you'll always get warm fresh fries and the ketchup will handle the flavor

I had high blood pressure and was in good shape. I started fasting where my eating window is from 2pm-7pm. Everything magically got better. Doctors wanted to put me on medication and I looked for alternatives because I’m only 37.

I look at it like this, who pipes are going to blow first, neighbor who has newer system with 60 pounds psi or my set up which is 60 years old running 150psi, pill isn't a bad option compared to stroke or Aneurysm.

Have read the whole thread. Great info and suggestions. I have completely cut caffeine out of my diet. One thing to try that I like is Sierra Nevada Hop Water. 0 calories / 0 alch. Has a bitter taste to it but good (expensive but worth it). Go get a good doctor (it is worth it). Make adjustments and watch your kids grow up.

140/80 before I left to bring my oldest to his conditioning training. I feel better today. I’ve only drank water today and just plain deli turkey. I’m hungry now though so I gotta figure something out

That’s great to hear.

Still go to the doc but I bet the water helped a lot.

If you have a Whole Foods or a Sprouts etc maybe hit up the salad bar etc?

Complete work up from the physician, when you get one. Get labs for everything, it will help direct your MD. Ditch the fast food and processed foods as much as you can. Fresh vegetables and fruit. Also, minimize red meat. 160/90 is a concern as stated earlier. I still drink a lot of coffee so I disagree with some of the comments on that. I hit the gym 4-5 times a week, I'm 69 and in great shape for my age, still can jog for an hour when I want to. You can overcome this with the right steps. Good luck.

Drink a lot of water cut the fast food and walk. I have changed up a lot of crap since February after going to the doc for the first time in a long time and it’s made a big difference. Small changes to your routine make a big difference. I never drank coffee but way too much soda and thought it would be tough to not drink the soda but wasn’t a big deal.

Fuck deli turkey…check the package, it’s nothing but salt.

Check out “Dash Seasoning” it’s got no salt. Go to the store and check every label walking down the bread aisle…it’s amazing what crap is in “clean” food.

obviously I need to be asking a dr but do you think it’s possible to change my diet and stay off medication.
Maybe, maybe not. The lucky ones can control it with diet…but there are more players in the game than what you eat.

Order a blood pressure tester (proper cuff, not the wrist one). And check it on occasion. If it’s high, don’t try to check it again for another 30 minutes because your anxiety will drive it higher…don’t worry about it, go do something else to take your mind off of it and test it later or the next day. I’ve found that random intervals is best. If I “get ready” to check my BP…it’s always high. If the wife or kid (I’ve assigned them to randomly walk up and slap the cuff on) determine when I check it…it’s always lower/better.

For starters...just use the standard "recommended daily allowance" chart and start reading the labels....you'll likely find you've been eating what is effectively poison for your whole life....change that up, try and comply with the recommended numbers, and most of your problems will go away

You asked for a Dr. so here is my choice. We used him for several years before moving to Havasu. He is very thorough and has connections to get lab work done right. He is a “Consigere” Dr and might cost a bit more, but he takes all the time you need to understand what he knows.

With the current routine you have outlined absolutely yes.
You’ve got at least 4 body bad behaviors going on every day.
Which 2 do you think can be easily modified?
My old guy advice is stop the soda and the fast food immediately.
That’s half the bad shit you are doing every day.
Then start getting the caffeine under control. Chocolate milk is for your boys, not for you. I loved all that shit too but c’mon man!
It’s not a religion, I put sugar in my coffee, I use milk and chocolate syrup in my mochas. I salt my fish with pink salt, I drink ginger ale every night with my makers mark whiskey, etc.
So the deal is that by cutting out that fucking heart stopping fast food you can enjoy the other things IN MODERATION without being a monk. Especially with the exercise you get.

I had dinner with a good friend last week. We went to a nice steak house. He rides his bicycle religiously and you all know him. He ordered a big steak with fries and bread on the side, while I had my green beans and petite sirloin steak.. I asked him if those carbs were a concern for him? Because he is the healthiest person I know.
He showed me his logs for a recent morning ride.
1300 calories in one ride….
“Carbs don’t concern me!” Lol
Hard to argue that right?
Cut out that fast food and eat fresh…watch what happens.

@wash11 wrote an entire testimonial about his life changing experience with food modification.

Here's McDonalds...I used to stop and get 2 Sausage McMuffin with eggs....put a tube of their Mexican Salsa on it and it's good stuff...every morning on the way to work for years....

830mg of sodium each. 2 of these puts me over the daily target before 8AM. Then we get a couple more burgers for lunch with some fries, and whatever else for dinner....plus whatever gas station snacks in a bag for snacks in the truck.....yeah, that's not good.

Check out the spicy chicken McCrispy.... chicken is healthier right?...1200mg of sodium

Im only 36 so if im being honest with you guys this is all kind of depressing to me which i know I can’t sit around feeling sorry for myself but I gotta do something
I’m 37. I forgot my laptop in havasu so will be short. You are risking severe heart damage, you need to be on meds NOW…. You are risking heart failure etc. you are welcome to dm me. My heart issues largely stemmed from unknown uncontrolled blood pressure too long and some heridtary factors, as well as a viral infection that almost killed me…

I cannot emphasize this enough at your age how serious this is!!! Do not become a statistic

Here is my 2 cents worth.....It sounds like its diet and stress to me.

Change those factors and you hopefully can avoid the medications.

Listen to your Doc but also inform yourself.

The change will be hard but you have proven you can adapt. Do it for your family if not for you.

Read wash11 thread life changing. I also had HBP, diet is huge and the foods you eat! I have been off meds for over a year and BP is lower than when I was on meds.
I work out
5 days a week cardio mixed in since forever but still BP went up in my forties. Did some research on food cut out salt completely(except on Sunday on my eggs) and gave up the occasional cigar on Saturday. I also added Joel's beef to my diet a few days a week instead of just chicken and my BP went down even more!!
Salt for me is a trigger for my BP you don't realize salt is in almost everything read labels and if you use salt make sure it's natural sea salt.

I’m 52
I work on mobile rock crushing equipment (extreme conditions) 14 hr Mon. 16hrs Tues, 14 Wed. just so far this week.
No fast food
No sugar drinks
No MSG’s
Very few carbs
High protein

You have a lifestyle issue, as do most Americans.
You have concerned yourself with all sorts of things and ignored your health like many people do.
Time to either watch your health decline or change your lifestyle.

The food you are eating has your body completely out of wack.
You can band aid it with medication which will cause other issues or you can peruse a healthy lifestyle.

One takes work and dedication and the other does not,
Life is never as complicated as most of us make it.

Look how popular this thread is with all the posts.
Serious business most middle age guys are having to face which is why you are getting so many responses.
