Black California License Plates With White Letters

What's the deal with black California license plates with white letters & numbers, I went on the DMV website and only found black plates with yellow digits.
Are these fake plates? Are these worthy of a fine or do most cops just look away? I'd really like to get these plates, but I don't want to draw any unnecessary attention my way.

If you paint the yellow letters on a California black plate, white, they will shoot you

Saw a LEO pull someone over last month for doing that.

you can order vinyl wraps over your existing plates. its up to the cop's attitude if they're gonna give you a ticket or not.

Most of the ones you see are wrapped. Its pretty easy. I believe everything to do them is available online. Including the numbers/letters.

They’re mostly wrapped. The new electronic ones are black with white letters though as well.

No, altering a license plate isn’t legal.

if its written vc 4464 for altering a license plate its a $197 ticket. 5201.1c however is $1100 if you're found to be painting or covering over the reflective surface to avoid a ticket. I'd argue they'd need to prove you did it intentionally to avoid a fine via the reflective surface... ie they found you in the fast track lane on the freeway, etc. otherwise you just did it for the "look."

only reason i know any of this is because i used to have a "cover" over my license plate so people couldnt steal my registration stickers.

not sure what he was written for, CHP wrote it. and the reason they stopped him, he has every intention of fighting it. no fix it tick it. it was a wrap deal, took him about 10 minutes to pull it off. i though it reflected better then the OG plates.

Testers makes model paint that matches the license plate colors and the paint is not reflective. The paint looks identical.

I just wrapped my wifes plates in white with black lettering. They look clean on her white car that has black trim. It being black on white is subtle. Hopefully subtle enough to NOT get pulled over.

No, altering a license plate isn’t legal.

I've run the beat up one on a couple old hot rods I had. The one on the left would've looked like a diamond on a goat's ass. Never got hastled, but never did anything to get lit up either. I always figured I'd just tell them I washed it too much.
