This trip has been getting planned for a few months now. First thing we needed to do was get an RV to take the trip in. Started a thread and it feels like that was quite the mission. After a long search, and finding the RV we wanted, we had to pivot and start over. It was stressful at times, but I honestly think we are in the right rig now. I forgot to mention the last 7 weeks I’ve been working out of the state. I don’t know how we made it through, but we did and honestly I’m sooo ready for this trip.

So this was day one bringing the rv home. The original one was in castiac, so I had to take time off work to go see it, and I was going to have to figure out how I was going to go pick it up. With being out of town, and not knowing when it would be ready, it was putting a lot of stress on me. The Forest River we ended up getting was in rancho, right by my job, and the guy is a super cool boater, that has a place near us in BHC. Like I said, the RV that we got everything just felt right this time.

So with this RV checked the boxes. We got the large fresh water tank, 80 gallons, and the bunks for the boys. This coach rides better with some upgrades to the sway bars and shocks. I will admit that the sunova we wanted was a little nicer, or higher end on the inside, but I think this one is a little more mechanically upgraded if that makes sense. We are talking 08 and 07, so being that old they could both use upgrades honestly. The sunova had a king bed, and that is the only thing I think man, that would have been nice. But ours has a queen, and my wife is tiny so whatever. The RV we got also saved me around 7k so I will take the queen bed. The seller was honest and said it’s going to need tires, so he took a little more of the list price which I thought was cool. Obviously the boys have been super stoked so we had to make sure we knew how everything worked, so backyard camping.

I believe that was Friday night and Saturday morning it needed to go get tires. @CLdrinker did me a big favor and let me come grab some riding gear early in the morning. That gave me enough time to come back and get the coach to the tire shop. I’ve been trying to grab any gear I can so my house is a mess but I love it.

I’m still looking for a couple things and I need a few bags now but we are getting long close. Rv went to the tire shop and they knocked it out quick

with that taken care of it was time to address the bikes. Now normally I take care of maintenance on carbs and tires, but I’m out of time. I took the bikes to dirty little hands, and they dialed me in. Fresh tires all around and carb clean ups. Quick way to spend 1000 bucks but whatever we are ready to go.

Now that the bikes are good we need to get back to the trailer. Needed to rewire the lights so yesterday we finished that.

The wives and my mom were doing tamales inside the house yesterday, so I did whatever I could to stay outside 😂. Cleaned the carb on the gen so now this is also ready to go.

Today I’m hoping to get out to grab a quad from fct and maybe some boots and gear from Corona Chris. We are getting pretty close, and I’m super excited. I’m really hoping this is the first trip of many. I’ll post updates as we get closer, and pics along the way. Just super stoked to do this. I feel like this is why I’ve been working so hard these last few years and now is time to start enjoying it. We are headed here

Congrats Vic. I hope it goes as planned. As far as wood I have a few 44 or 55 gallon trash cans from Home Depot I put it in and strap inside my trailer.

Check on marketplace or offer up for Brute trash cans. They are expensive otherwise. You can also load the bikes then stack the wood all around the bases of them if no room for cans. Takes a while longer to unload. But more wood you fit the better.

I have 2 quads torn down to frames and a dirt bike to swap carb on. I wish I knew someone locally to just pay. Much easier that way when busy.

Have fun! Boys will remember these trips forever.

With bikes, and firewood, I used to take a 2x8 or 2x10, and run it down the side of the trailer. Use a dump can at the front and rear as spacers, and make a trough to pile wood it. On more that one occasion the plank was also used to get a stuck tow vehicle up and rolling too.

Congrats on the new rig, you and the family are going to have a great time!

As far as the fire wood goes there are people that will deliver for reasonable price and you can split the cost with your camping group. Transporting wood is a PIA. I have a few numbers for guys that deliver out there if you need them. It will be cold....

Have fun, here is your new mantra.

“My name is Vic, I enjoy long walks on the beach and Mobil rv repair.”

This will help you 👍
Isn’t that the truth went to pick ours up at storage yesterday and the f’n battery disconnect solenoid went bad I believe. Have to go back over today and hope I can bypass it to get it to my house.

Learn to diagnose on the road, especially in the dessert. This was my nemesis in the last trip and I fortunately found it or I would’ve been driving back from Texas without a generator.

Was gonna hardwire it if I couldn’t find an auto parts store. Always good to have people like @rivermobster on dial to explain the damage one can do when jerryriggin something.

So stoked for you and your family, Vic.

The first trip....you have a learning curve ahead of you, just roll with it my friend. I am sure you and your wife will have a list of stuff to do, change, fix and buy when you roll back in the driveway....a lot will be small stuff, and you will re-organize the storage on the RV several times before you get it right. You are going to spend a lot of time in the desert, and water will be a premium. when you are filling the tank at homfe remember to fill the water heater tank by running the pump with the hot water tap in the sink open until it runs water. There is 6 gallons. A lot of people don't do that til they get where the are going, then they are starting out down 6 gallons....and never light that water heater off when the water heater tank is dry...
That RV is gonna make a lot of memories.
We sold the Class A when the boys were in their late teens.
When my wife and I were cleaning it out we had to laugh.
Crayons, coloring books...kids toys....stashed everywhere.
I had been trying to keep excess weight off the rig (we haul over Donner Pass) and found all this stuff buried in cabinets...
Stuff no one had touched in years.
First I got mad, then I had to laugh...
Memories.

Vic, just a heads-up, pack a cheapie multi-meter. The crappiest one from HF, and leave it and a spare battery in the coach. It csn be more useful than a test light, and may come in handy for bikes, 110v stuff and general fukery.

Carbs weren’t too bad it was the damn tires. These are good kids though that work hard so I don’t mind supporting their cause one bit, wish there were more kids like them.

Another piece to the puzzle. Thanks again @FCT View attachment 1462599
When your kids start out growing this stuff. Go ahead and think of old me. My oldest is 7. She's on a dirtbike. But the two boys. Ones not even 2 and the other graces us with his presence next month. So I think we might be on a perfect growth difference.

You also motivated me to bust my ass on my truck today. I need to get camping after this baby thing is over with.

Congratulations Vic and Family!

Going to be a great time !

In a few years you’ll be joking about the 1st trip….

Look for a clean plastic 55 gallon drum we would fill it with water so we could fill up our tank! We only had 75 gallons !

And the dishes and showers it goes fast

You need to have a way to pump the water into the coach, I had an extra 12 volt water pump w/ alligator clamps to clip on a battery. I just kept everything in the coach

I pass the torch on to you! Its alot of work!

I always told my friends the camping thing is the most expensive way to act homeless.

After driving 6-8 hours to get to camp to meet my friends, I was always grouchy and over it. Sometimes I didnt even unload my car. It just got to be a "job".

But some damn good memories were made, cant argue that!

Over Thanksgiving we started getting an intermittent squeak from the heater blower motor. Took me about an hour to tear into it and swap out the motor and $90.00 in parts. The girls like the comfort it provides and I like that they are happy while we are out doing things.

We went up to Montana a few summers back, couple weeks on the road, wife, kid, dog and flat towed the jeep. It was a bit of work for me, but then one night the wife and I are sitting at our camp in Wyoming and our daughter comes riding across the pasture up to us bareback on a horse. Pretty unforgettable moment and worth all the effort.

Do you guys run heater at night while sleeping? Seems to be split on this. Poisoning from the propane leaking. I've heard that's older units. Not really a concern on newer ones.

My buddies run it before bed then shut it off. My wife refuses with the kids. Wants it running. But it's definitely on my mind.

Not to thread jack, but I'm sure vic could use this info as well.

Enjoy. Some of our best vacations were RVing with the family. Eastern Sierra, Hwy 395 region, was among our favs. Later years, leaving our RV on site, at a river RV park worked well for us. Got to where we could be fully set up in 15-20 minutes.

RV Awnings - Work best when they are kept stretched tight. We found a few of these ‘de-flappers’ attached to each side of the fabric really helped. Then, IMG_8613.png ratchet straps ran from the front of the awning frame and attached to stakes driven into the ground helped even more.
