What’s the best route? I’ll be towing a trailer. I’ve mapped it twice. One time it took me through Vegas and the other time through Bishop. Both were about the same but which is better while towing? Thanks in advance.

My old boss had a 2nd home outside of Boise. Not sure why but he would always go thru Vegas. 😉

Lots of grades taking the Bishop route. Big, long one just north of Bishop, then another north of Mammoth, and another just out of Lee Vining/Mono Lake. All 4 lanes though. If you go up Hwy 95 out of Winnemucca, there is nothing. No cell service, fuel, or food once you leave the NV/OR border until you reach the OR/ID border. Fill up in Winnemucca. There was a fuel station on the res in NV right before the border, but my memory is telling me it may have burned down? Can't recall exactly. It's been 3 years since I've been through there. Otherwise, it's a pretty nice drive. The 93 is nice also going into Twin Falls. No major grades north of I-80. Watch for cops in that area between Jackpot and Twin Falls. Both 95 & 93 are mostly 2 lanes with passing lanes here and there.

Going up Hwy 395 will take you through some of the most beautiful country in our nation. Going up Hwy 95 will be a lot of boring, flat desert.

I have gone a few times up 14-395-6 in my RV once and once towing a car trailer, easy ride, desolate and no cell service, Have come home through Ely into Vegas not bad either, Coming through Salt Lake and down is the most populated but longest.

We've done Hwy 93 north from the 15. Nice remote drive. Lots of this.

I have made that drive several times going thru Vegas and up the center of Nv. Nice quiet drive NO traffic. Pulled my 5th wheel trailer up there and back. 20' enclosed trailer at least 5 times.

That's a good route also. Still have a significant grade coming out of Bishop on Hwy 6, but you avoid the ones between Mammoth and Bridgeport. We took a U-haul full of tools that way once to avoid the other two grades. It is two-lane most of the way, but it's a good road from Benton to Winnemucca.

Made that trip many times. Sounds like it is coming up pretty soon but if not the weather will help with your choice. The easiest by far for me is the 15 through Salt Lake City. Lots of places to stop. Lots of gas stations, hotels and rest areas. 80 MPH speed limit for many miles, although towing I’m not comfortable driving that fast. Quickest way out of California and lower gas prices. Once you are past Mesquite NV the drive is very pretty. Cell service all of the way. Try to time SLC so you are not there during rush hour.

Did this a little over a month ago from riverside. We went 15 through Vegas then up the 93 through Ely. A few stops for food along the way and it was just over 13 hours with a little road construction (average was between 75 - 80). The 93 was far better road to drive on and believe it or not and just about as beautiful as the Bishop route. They have had a ton of rain all year and I was very surprised at how green it was once you leave Vegas and put some miles on the 93. I will say hands down the 95 south out of Boise sucked... bumpy and no cell service. There were some very picturesque views and some cool small towns, but actual road had some pretty shitty parts (think 40 east between Kingsman and Flagstaff) until you got around the 80. There was a ton of construction going on, so maybe it's been fixed by now.

Great advice right here.

I've done both through 395 & 15 a few times always towing but I have not done the 93 though it's so desolate with limited services.
I'll be going to Boise for a wedding in October.

One reason I'd say about traveling on the 15 is the overnight stops along the way, one is Cedar City, there is a CG there that has pull through sites, park and Uber to a Brewery Woodfired Pizza, Craft Beer joint, excellent.

Another stop is Twin Falls with either a KOA or Good Sams CG with a pull through and again Uber to a cool Steak/Fishhouse on the River for dinner and then onto Boise/Meridian in the am.
Please go to Barbacoa, it's amazing trust me, if not I'll buy in whatever place you choose in LHC lol.

Then for the return trip, we plan on going west to Bend OR. for a few days (great drive from Boise by the way) hit some Brewery's and on the way back down the 5, there are some great stops along the way as well for a one stop overnight and hit the road again in the am. I plan most daily drives from 5-6 hrs so I can pull over to have time for a few (several) cold one's a Cigar, and well I have to let the dog run around right ;)

I would go 395 through Bishop. Like others have stated there are a couple good grades to pull but they are not that bad. I pulled a 26’ enclosed FULL to the brim (13k) from Palm Desert to Boise via 395 with no issues. I chose this route because the road conditions are great and if you have any issues you have services almost every 50 miles or so.

I would avoid the 15 through Salt Lake. The roads through SLC are absolute shit and will beat your truck/trailer to pieces. Plus there is construction from Hurricane to Logan that makes traffic a mess. Just my two cents.

As T&Y stated- the 15 to Ely then to Boise is the route I would go. Just know there will be areas that have no services, so a break down would be a nightmare.
I always spend the night in Ely as a stopping point from So Cal to Boise, small quaint mining town, some casinos etc. then you chug on through Twin Falls and its about 2 hours to Boise from Twin Falls.
Taking the 15 all the way through Utah is ok but as others stated, the 15 and Salt Lake SUCKS however if you run into car/trailer trouble, lots of services along the way, many places to eat and spend the night if desired.
Going up 395, Bishop then across the mountains would be the most scenic drive as the High Sierras are beautiful this time of year, but again as mentioned, WATCH THE WEATHER- it can turn to crap in a heartbeat. As for pulling a trailer this route, you will be one of many thousands as this is a haven for RV'ers, safety in numbers I always say.

LHC to Boise is about 12 hrs, passing thru LV then up the 93. Ely NV is about 1/2 way and a nice place to spend the night. The route up 395 is far more scenic and there are a couple of grades. 395 is about 3.5 hrs longer than the 93. Best to avoid LV during high traffic periods.

Thanks everyone. It’s a turn and burn, just dropping the trailer off. I’m going to check out the 15 route but I was leaning toward the 15 to 93. Keep the info coming🍺🍺

Fuel is cheaper in Alamo then the loves on 93 right off the 15. In ely I stop at the Shell for fuel, next and last stop would be in Twin.
Safe travels.

I live in LA and tow my race boat in my enclosed trailer up to Idaho.
I like turning off right past Vegas and head up from there. Real easy drive pulling the trailer.

EDIT: Recommendation if you leave LA around 5 or 6 am, you can get to Jackpot, NV in about 12 hours. You can stay in the hotel, get a good dinner, do some gambling and drive the rest of the way the next day.

I haven’t been to Boise, but I just took a look at the map going north of Las Vegas and I 15 as you cut off a 93 right now it figures 9 1/2 hours driving time

That’s a pretty desolate route, but if you go up by 15 and then cut over, it comes out to about 50 minutes longer. Sometimes about safety and availability of fuel. That’s not much of a difference for such a long drive. I probably take I 15.
That’s my opinion and I’ve been on I 15 all the way from Huntington Beach into Canada. Up through Montana it’s beautiful. Most of Utah I’m not so.

Keep in mind you can come from Sunny California and end up in St. George Utah. It’s a decent place to do an overnight or at and it’ll be about six hours. Pulling a trailer.

Your next day would only be eight hours of driving.

I've taken this route a few times and prefer it over the 395 through Bishop. Flatter, less winding and I personally prefer it because it is mostly separated highways. The downside is fewer locations to stop for fuel, food and restrooms.

Fuel is crazy expensive at the Loves at 93 and the 15.
In our 2 year RV experience, I found Love's and T/A (Travel Centers) to be the most expensive. We will seek out a Maverick if possible, or anything else.

Gas Buddy and Fuel Stations (for big rigs) apps are my friends.

Gas Buddy is great. Or, when driving through populated areas, plan your route around the Costcos.
