I'm building some new fences and gates here shortly....redwood T&G.

Ideally, I'd like to preserve the natural color forever, but I don't think that's in the cards.

I've use Penofin before on a deck and it's OK, but wondering if there's anything better these days?

I'd like it not to be grey in a year or 2 and not to be rotten in 5 years, ideally.

I used an oil base on the gate, after the second coat it's working pretty good.

and this stuff on the main fence it's been holding up for 4 years so far

I just put back up a new fence about 3 weeks ago and sealed it last week with this stuff from HD. Guy at the paint counter recommend it and it had good reviews. In the third pick you can see on the right where I ran out of sealer. So far so good but time will tell.

This fence has been up for 30+ years and was last sealed/stained about 10 years ago.

Look at skiiens products, nothing from California. You’d have to get it out of Kingman or somewhere in Arizona sent to you. They make it an incredible, but they called log oil that will last many many years. Anything from California last 12 months at the most.

Boiled linseed oil has been a long used
( 4 decades) product for wood preservative.

It would be cheaper to replace the fence with what that shit costs now days.
Can't imagine today's cost...crap was like unicorn tears 20 years ago. "Kosmic" clear was my go-to...after a week you'd need a damn grinder to cut it though.

Penofin and Sikkens are both linseed oil based. Good stuff.
Transformation is the line my reps pushing for oil transparent stains.
It's also linseed based.
The thing to remember with any stain coating is to make sure to use the same based material every time you maintain it.
Linseed over linseed. Latex over latex. Mineral spirits over Mineral spirits.
Latex transparent stain is going to be the most natural looking but mybleast favorite. Never applied it to redwood.
