So I am designing my retirement home and shop space and came up with this.
SQ FT
Living space footprint 1200 (Two story 2400 total)

All of my stuff in the garage 3164
with five feet in between rows

left over work space 1836

Do you think that it is enough left over shop space?

Feel free to use this floor plan, as well as photo for inspiration of this concept.

Nope. I’m at 2000 sqft of shop space (14’ walls) and a 900 sqft house garage and it’s far from enough. I’m looking at another detached barn for the tractor and equipment.
But, I don’t know what you will use the shop space for and what you’ll store.

You talking Bardominium OR Barndominium? I like the former more than the latter. ;););)

I have 3500sq feet between 2 RV garages and ran out of room to go any larger. and wish I had room for another 3500'..... always go bigger if able. :)

I’d honestly try to go as big as possible. Our garage in havasu is 1900 sq/ft and it’s not nearly enough.

It really depends on how that 1836' is configured and it's intended usage.

It really depends on what you want to do in the space!

if you pic…. say 1 car and work on it until completion yes that would probably work.
But
if you add other elements into the mix say tractors, RV’s, Boats, off road cars then nope!

If you needed to add on for more storage or shop space what could you do?

you didn’t say where you were located and do you plan to park your dailies inside or even service them inside.

I would go for a plan A knowing you have a Plan B you can exercise if needed.

I did 32x48, looked massive. Now with all the toys in, I can barely walk around. Go as big as the land and your budget will allow. I remember the contractor saying going another 8’ longer wouldn’t really be that much more. I was at my budget limit so I declined. REALLY stupid mistake.

I am working on our Barndaminium with attached Bar-daminium and shop right now. :D
I'm teaching myself to draw in CAD and this is what I have drawn so far.
Figured once I have some deminsioned CAD files I can send them to the metal building company to do their final design and then off to my architect to do his drawings and engineering so that I can submit both sets of drawings and engineering for a permit.

My .02, unless there is a mezzanine above make all three garage doors RV height.

Looks good
The 2 front doors and 1 rear door are all 16 wide and 14 tall doors.
Yes. There will be a mezzanine in the one corner. Shop is 48 x 70 and only reason it isn't another 20 feet wider is because of the cost and height.

Why barndo with all of that elevation detail? Barndos are effective built as big boxes. The interior space you loose with the red iron trusses with those large spans starts to work against you.

Design your house how you want it with traditional construction and just build a huge detached rectangular shop.

Regarding two story barndo interiors… you are basically framing an interior building within a building and the cost saving disappears.

Having said all that. I built a 34x50x16 metal builiding and a 24x50x16 pole barn and it’s maxed out. I build everything 16 tall so the next guy can incure the cost of interior two story build outs lol.

What you are doing will be super cool, I just assume most people like myself do the barndo to try to keep the cost down and it is easy to overrun cost.

Most metal building companies can give you a rough cost per foot/lbs or something real dirty before you give them a drawing etc.. you might have to push a little or just give some really rough box dimensions… it’s might surprise you on the cost either good or bad.

Nice 👍

My current garage has a couple doors that are smaller just for aesthetics and it sucks lol

I've built several RV Garages and Custom Homes. I learn more with each build. Most important thing I've learned on RV Garages is,
1-They are never big enough!😁
2-All doors must be 16 'wide and 14' tall with 4' returns as minimums.
3- 70' deep is a minimum if at all possible.

For me it is logistics. I can have the shell built in KY while still living in CA then move all of my things into the shell including my rv then build the living area . I have not decided on framing material yet.
I am designing the house portion now and the plan is to be off the grid.
Current size 60x120 I may go to 80x100

I got the thread cross wired with the drawings posted vs your original post. Big rectangles make for the traditional advantages of a barndo construction. I might try to make the 60 foot work but go as tall on the wall as you can stomach because you can always drop down a few feet and use a half truss off the side for more square footage. That adds a nice little elevation detail later on.

Those are not my plans. I started the post

Have a Friend that is having 1 drawn up. He told me 5k sq ft shop 5k liveable. Last time we talked at Fox's. He changed it. 12k shop 5k liveable. Said the 5k shop was not big enough.

Interesting thread. I’ll have to have my brother looking at it as he just bought a property in Nevada. I think he’s going to build a barn dominium.

I really like this layout, I would add another RV door to the backside of the garage and make it a pull-through personally.
Probably add one on the gable end. It depends on the property I buy and the orientation.

And for me it is a perfect layout I can live mostly on lower level and guests upstairs. I have thought about a second master on the upper floor.

What about changing the wrap around patio to a wrap around upper deck? Might as well use some of that height!
