Anyone go through this? My son (12 weeks) now has to wear a helmet to shape his forehead. His metopic crack (forehead to bridge of nose) was fused before birth and we could see it on the ultrasound. We had surgery for him on December 20th to break the crack open so his forehead would shape. Now we just got his helmet and seems like we took 11 weeks back of progress. He hates the damn thing and will not sleep in it unless he is being held (which was the not the case prior to the helmet)

So any parents go through this? If so any suggestions?

He has to wear it 23 hours a day. We finally had to take it off last night so he and we could sleep. This isn’t the right thing to do.

Here he is with his surgery robe on at Choc hostpial

That’s got to be a tough one. He will most likely get used to it in the next week or so. Just try and hang tough and distract him with whatever works.

More importantly make sure and give mom some relief as well. Get her out of the house for a few hours and make sure you do the same. Otherwise you two will be exhausted and less patient.

First, congratulations! Nothing like the birth of a child, he is a handsome little guy. Second, thank goodness for the advancement of science and medicine to recognize and have a solution for this condition. I would encourage you to keep with the Dr's orders, it goes by so fast and it is what is best for him.

Better to take care of it now rather than later in life. My friends daughter at a young age had to have a strip cut from her skull front to back. The strip was cut into spacers and the skull was spread apart and
Spacers installed to make the head more round. Years later her head was the perfect shape. It’s amazing what they do nowadays. Your cute little guy will never remember it and will be great. Harder on the parents for sure.

I have a nephew that went through it and he eventually got used to it. He was born with an extra skull bone in the back that made his melon a little off. After he was done with the helmet you couldn't even tell. I did catch hell from my SIL when she caught me putting stickers on it though! My brother laughed! Cute little guy you have there, it will get better.

They wanted to put a helmet on my son because they said his skull was a bit mishaped. It wasnt a health concern for him so we didnt do it. His forehead is slightly uneven to the touch.. Nothing anybody would even know if it wasnt pointed out. But yes if there is a health issue i would definitely do it now while the skull is still somewhat soft. See cant even tell behind all that hair! :D excuse my mugg!

I think your son will adjust. He was probably just getting used to the weight of his own head, as muscles develop. The helmet may feel light to us, and especially in comparison to our fat heads. At his size, a couple ounces may feel like a dumbell. Kids are resilient, he'll adapt, and may even get strong neck muscles quicker than average.

I agree, good lookin' kid!

My nephew was supposed to have one but my sister in-law decided it was too much of a hassle (for her of course) so she rarely ever put it on him. The little guy is a really happy little kid now (no idea how with that waste of a human for a mom) but it's unlikely he'll ever be able to wear a helmet his head is that misshaped.

If you're into ANYTHING that will involve a helmet in their life time, just stick it out and keep it up. He'll thank you later in life when he can just buy an off the shelf helmet rather than have a custom one made.

My twin Niece and Nephew had to wear 1. They got used to it after a week or so. There first River trip at 10 months they were rocking the helmet. Hassle but we'll worth it in the long run. Tough first few days but stick to the Docs orders and all will be good.

View attachment 719736 View attachment 719737 View attachment 719738 Your son will adjust and be just fine. My daughter had a crooked skull and had to wear one. Our friend painted and dressed it all up. Here she is 8 years later.

I hope this is encouraging to the new parents. She's a beautiful little girl.

The suggestion that the parents take time outs is a good one. It must be hard as hell to do something to your child that makes them cry and fight.

BPracing, I'm sending you guys an attaboy and my best wishes for a good outcome with lots of future happiness and love.

Biggest time to worry is when it comes off. My Niece no big deal. Nephew he was used to wearing it and knocking his dome without it hurt for a change. Week or so and same deal thing of the past.

We have twins and only one needed the helmet. We had it wrapped to look like a football and people would stop us and talk about their child wearing one. He got used to it very fast and was totally fine with it. We were strict with the 23 hours and he got it off pretty quick. The Dr. said most people don’t follow the guidelines and they end up wearing it much longer. Looking back now it seemed like a blink in time compared to all the other days! Just stick with the Dr. orders and you’ll be happy with the results. Use rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and just spray it on and let it air dry so it doesn’t smell. Let me know if you have any questions.

As said above while it might seem like forever right now, remembering it is gonna be a second in the hour glass of time. I didn't have any helmet needs, but we had a few health scares with our kids and while it wasn't that long ago, now it seems like it was a different lifetime to me.

Just ride it out and everything will be fine Ian.. As always you know we are all routing for you and yours!

It has to just break your heart when the little guy cry's out for you to fix his discomfort. Hopefully he gets used to wearing it soon so everyone can sleep in peace. One good thing is that he'll have no recollection of ever wearing the helmet as a baby.

i dont have anything to add on the helmet front, but as a new dad to a barely 4 month old, all i can say is keep your head up and keep mom happy as you can. fingers crossed for the best outcome for you and your family.

A good friend and coworker are in the boat. They will be doing a surgery (forehead and top of the skull I believe) in February. They will be in the helmet for the next year.

like everyone said hang in there , it will be over quickly. but then again, nothing is ever over with kids.
we thought of putting a helmet on our son from 1 1/2-- 2 years old . because he hit his head on everything. he always had a bump on his forehead. lol

Well we went thru quite a bit with our son and during the time it seemed like forever but looking back it really wasn't. My son has Cerebral Palsy so once he was diagnosed then we did braces every day and then a body wrap then we decided for surgery on his left leg to stretch out the muscle. All that being said once he got used to it we really didn't need to fight it, he is a trooper though and never really complained.
I hope everything works out for your son and you start getting some sleep, hopefully he will get more used to it and it will ease up.
The weird thing is I just saw this on FB the other day.

take the improvement where you can get it........
Babies are adaptable, he will get used to it shortly if you insist. If you fold too much he will also learn that he can train you.
