So I need to help my son out with a reliable used car. I noticed here in AZ a paper title isn't necessarily issued. How does that work when buying a used car here?

Seller can do a eTitle transfer using the AZ app, or request a paper title. Cost a few bucks and 2-3 days to get paper title

Think they can both go into mvd and transfer it there.

If the owner doesn’t have a paper title (it’s optional) they can request one, or your son can create an online account with AZ MVD and accept the title that way.

It’s a trip sending a title to someone online. Done it a couple times.

Get a paper title or have them show their AZMVD portal which shows car is clear and ready to be transferred. I recently purchased a paperless title with a notarized transfer paper only to find out there is a lean and I have been fighting since. Has been a total pain in the ass.
I would compare it to a cash vs check sale.
