I was reading and hearing there was a spike in covid cases here in AZ and so many are baffled why that is the case. I think its pretty simple. Its the same reason cold and flu propagates so much more in the winter than the summer.... it doesn't have ANYTHING to do with your immune system slowing down like the old wives tale goes.... it has to do with when its cold outside, people stay inside to stay warm therefore increase the person to person transmission. Well, this last week was hot as balls in AZ but..... almost all the outdoors activities that one could do to cool down are closed so..... people stayed inside more-so than usual. Couple that with the protests aiding a little bit of normal virus transmission and poof.... COVID spike. But hey, let's let our all-knowing leaders explain how that is nowhere near the case and rationalize keeping everything closed down.

It’s more media hysteria.

My wife’s coworker (RN’s) used to work at a hospital in Phoenix that is currently the biggest Covid hospital in AZ. A friend of her’s that still works at that hospital told her the other day that there has been a spike and the hospital now has 100+ Covid patients on vents. If true, that’s pretty significant.

This is obviously third hand information, so take it for what it’s worth.

I don’t think it’s that sophisticated. I’m going to guess that testing is way up. More tests will net more positive results.
It's not that complicated. Look at the evidence in New York where it says the majority of positive cases are from people that are aditingly self-quarantined. Couple that with the CDC report that the virus is not easily spread through contact and it's pretty obvious. Plus, I believe I recall reading that the percentage of positives of tests performed surged as well. Can't remember where I read that though.

They are metering out the positives as required in order to keep the numbers up.

Other than the boat parade there hasn’t been a very big difference between weekdays/ weekends/ Holidays as far as I can tell.
It’s been crowded pretty much none stop in Havasu.
It might be starting to ease up a bit on weekdays now though...I was able to get a bar seat the other day at Shugrues.

I saw this on the news but they added a little more detail. In the beginning approx 5% of tests were positive, now we are averaging 9-10%. Hospitalizations are the highest they have been as well. I never believe the media anyway, but it would make sense that AZ would catch up to the rest of the states eventually.

I don't have the data from Arizona but a large hospital in OC has doubled their Covid census this week. The numbers aren't huge but they have doubled.

The county public health expert quit on Monday due to pressure from the OC Board of Supervisors to relax guidelines. The new guy dropped the mask requirement today. It will be interesting to watch the numbers going forward.

That seems like an extremely high percentage of new cases to number of tests. San Diego county has been hovering around 3% ( 2 to 4%) for a very long time now.

Another aspect at least in SD county is the extreme disproportional number of Hispanic cases, growing more so over time.

This website seems to support what the news was saying if you compare daily tests to daily confirmed positive. Looks like 5-10% positive depending on the day BUT I think you have to screen via telephone before scheduling the test so maybe they only accept likely cases??

My brother told me the other day his hospital is receiving most of their cases from the Mexicali/Calexico area. Many of whom live in Mexico but cross into States daily for work.
Did not ask whether they become San Diego statistics or Imperial Valley.

I think if you double check, you will see the numbers in La Paz County were much greater last week. Testing among tribal members has been showing large numbers of tribe members. The number of cases in La Paz County has jumped up a bunch in the past week, as have the numbers in the state of Arizona. At one point I thought the state was dropping, and they were showing roughly 200 new cases per day. Last week there were several days around 1500 new cases per day. I do agree that the widespread free testing is the reason for the increase in newly reported cases, but it's still cause for concern. https://www.azdhs.gov/preparedness/...se-epidemiology/covid-19/dashboards/index.php

The bottom line is 99.98% of the people that get it, dont die. As well, it turns out its really hard to get. Further, if you are outside of NYC or a nursing home, you are pretty much safe as normal.

Now, when everyone was locked down, that created a bunch of problems.

New cases don’t concern me as positive cases coupled with expanded testing is a good thing.

The only numbers that matter are ICU bed occupancy and deaths. Those trends in either direction is the tell tale indicator.

Hawaii is in the 300% list? WTF???? Who puts this together. Hawaii is one of the lowest case count. There is only one a day. Maybe......it will go to 3 a day that would be 300% rise.

Journalism is dead.

No relevant details, me no care.

I used to get old twice as fast each year when I was one year old, compared to now. It's the veil of statistics and the blindfold for the masses.

Interesting. What was the starting number? Percentage gained can be easy or hard depending on start value.

glad to hear the mask deal is dropped in OC.

Remember when Grads was more afraid of the flu than of having his brain strokes?
Then he got there and he was the ONLY patient in the entire new Covid wing?

Is it “double” when it goes from zero to one?
Lol

Caitlin Rivers, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said, "The current best estimates for the infection fatality risk are between 0.5% and 1%," which is dramatically lower than the United States' current calculated Covid-19 case fatality rate of 5.9%.

Testing is not really up from when we were getting 300-400 cases a day, but today cases are over 1600.

I can tell you the lady running the self check-out at Wally World appeared noticeably very ill. She was sitting at her Kiosk sweating with her head in her hands, she was not very responsive even for a wally employee
