My 9yo is all into space right now, so we supplemented his birthday money a bit to get a telescope...beginner grade but decent, as recommended by a hobbyist astronomer buddy of mine.

Supposedly this weekend Jupiter will be close enough to see it’s different colors through even a set of decent binoculars.

We got the telescope in today and set it up in the yard to figure it out...

Jupiter and 3 of its moons (zoom in if you can)

Should be pretty cool in the desert with no light pollution.

Nice pics, I was going to take mine out tonight and take some photos but didn't, maybe tomorrow night.

Jupiter was closest yesterday but the whole week should be good viewing. The moon is about half full but usually doesn't impede much.

I've been watching Jupiter for the last two weeks. At 10 PM, it's due south of me about 35° above the horizon. The planet is at its perigee, which is its closest orbital distance to the sun, and it is in opposition. It has been incredibly bright, and there are good reasons for that.

This story explains perigee and opposition, and also has links that assist in finding Jupiter in the night sky.

Jupiter will be well placed for observation, in the constellationOphiuchus. It will be visible for much of the night, reaching its highest point in the sky at around midnight local time.

From Plano, it will be visible between 21:09 and 05:40. It will become accessible at around 21:09, when it rises 7° above your south-eastern horizon, and then reach its highest point in the sky at 01:26, 34° above your southern horizon. It will become inaccessible at around 05:40 when it sinks to 8° above your south-western horizon.

Jupiter opposite the Sun

This optimal positioning occurs when Jupiter is almost directly opposite the Sun in the sky. Since the Sun reaches its greatest distance below the horizon at midnight, the point opposite to it is highest in the sky at the same time.

At around the same time that Jupiter passes opposition, it also makes its closest approach to the Earth – termed its perigee – making it appear at its brightest and largest.

This happens because when Jupiter lies opposite the Sun in the sky, the solar system is lined up so that Jupiter, the Earth and the Sun form a straight line with the Earth in the middle, on the same side of the Sun as Jupiter.

How did you take the pictures thru the telescope. It doesn’t show a camera adapter. Great pictures!

The wife found a thing that holds a phone abouve the eyepiece...although I didn’t have time to figure that out again...she spent 20 minutes getting it all dialed in, then it rang and the kid ran over and grabbed it lol.

I just held my phone over the eyepiece and took a picture

Great shots for just holding over the eyepiece! Sharp and clear.
