If I could afford to pay cash for this place, I might be gone. It's a bit far from the beach (that's bad for me), but it is in the pines (good for me). Property is smaller than I want (bad). Kitchen is laid out with a great view (good). It's about 80% ideal for me. Prescott is a pretty decent town. I spent a couple weeks there not that long ago.

Someone buy it, so I can come visit you! 😁

Funny That home popped up on my search radar earlier this week. Nice home at 650k

Totally agree

In fact, it seems Prescott not only hasn't cooled off, it seems a lot of places have gone up in value (or at least asking price) recently!

I think I know what area you are talking about. They have a few 2 wheeled bike races or poker runs over there. Nice big flat area off the hwy to camp.
Yeh might be but not sure all I know my uncle rides with his friend Keith there often they know the area really well and have some tracks that don’t have alot if use. And some are pretty established but in great shape.

Most properties on the market in Prescott have reduced price

Everyone wants that perfect climate.

I’m probably going to turn my northeast Phoenix home into a VRBO when I turn 67-70, and put all my stuff in storage, then travel when the place is rented out, using the cash, and reserving those 4 perfect weeks for myself. 😉

Earlier in this thread I said I would post some negatives …..

Here is a negative about living in Florida.

We have hurricane season. When I first moved here I didn’t really give that the total thought it deserved. Now, every year I worry about it. Owning a boat really makes it a complete hassle and there is no shortage of businesses ready to capitalize your misfortune. Hurricane storage is expensive and there is no guarantee that the high n dry won’t collapse, as we have all seen many times.

Hurricane Ian is a perfect example of what happens to neighborhoods. Even though I feel like I live in a prefect hurricane proof building…….. what good is that if the infrastructure around me is devastated for years? No electricity, grocery stores, and all the other stuff you need to survive.

Sure…… Hurricane Ian was bad, but it only had 150mph winds. Hurricane Dorian had 200mph winds and came closer to my home than Ian. Just imagine if Dorian had hit my neighborhood?

To sum things up……. I feel the City of Pompano Beach is a name on a hurricane roulette wheel that spins every August thru November, that 1 day, will have our number on it. I hate knowing that every year that is a possibility. It certainly doesn’t give me peace of mind.

Just something to think about.

That is one reason we chose Sarasota. Yes we almost took a direct hit here with Ian, but it is rare.

I moved to my happy place under the rainbow. I like the small town, like minded people. I still have to go to Cali here and there for work. The traffic and their government will make me never move back.
You only live once so enjoy your time here.

Here’s something that I do which kind of goes along with this thread.

I am always searching on Airbnb the monthly rates of places around the world. It’s not uncommon to see places renting for less on a monthly basis, than it would cost for 4 or 5 nights at a luxury hotel.

I do these searches because my wife and I are planning to travel the world in retirement. We have been blown away by how inexpensive it is in some places.

Not long ago I toyed with the idea of using my floating boatlift as a shipping cradle, to ship my boat to St Maarten for a season. My wife could do her job through the internet, while I captain boats. She rebuffed the idea until I showed her this waterfront home on Simpson Bay……. I might have a chance! Lol

Sorry for derail…. Lol
That would be my dream in retirement...go one of caribbean islands....captain charter boats for fun money and try and just become a local 1/3 of the year...

Spent 25+ years in Chandler, AZ & loved it 1988-2013. Moved to 30 miles northeast of San Francisco for my wife's work, loved the boating & the weather. Met some lifelong friends but the Liberal idiots were way too much for me. Moved full-time to Lake of the Ozarks in April 2021. We absolutely LOVE it here. Enjoy the 4 seasons. Bought a cruiser with full eisenglass so we can boat all year. We live at quiet end of the lake for a reason. I miss my Parker trips from Chandler but ZERO chance I'm moving away from LOTO now.

What is the quiet end? Nearby towns?

Our address is Sunrise Beach. Nearest town 4 miles away is Laurie. We live at 39mm (mile marker). The higher the mm the quieter the lake gets. I did a TON of research where we wanted to live. The further up lake higher mm you gotta be careful, you get into some very backwards hillbilly meth lab shit.

I believe @angiebaby would answer these 4 questions differently, I will raise a few points for consideration. We have been married for 32 years. Alignment of retirement plans should not be taken lightly. I have been given advice from a few different people regarding challenges in marriage after retirement, which is worth consideration. Your desires may not be aligned. Ours are not perfectly aligned, and we are managing it while we still have options. Once you are on a fixed income, it may be harder to make big changes, so you should be talking about these things in advance. Grandkids hold a lot of weight in the process. Your kids will take advantage of this and encourage you to stay close to them.

Don't forget about access to healthcare in your discussions. This was another piece of advice I have been given. It should be near the top of things when you are looking at a retirement location.

The question came up about how retired people drive these big-ass buses. I have no idea. I hate driving ours, and thank God I did not sell everything and go all in on an RV as a retirement plan. They are unreliable, and if you don't have a home, you might be living at the Cummins dealer for three months while they fix your junk. A trailer, park model or home in LHC is in our future.

I feel very lucky we have been nomadic for the last 18 months because we are getting schooled on all types of retirement lessons from people who are 15-20 years older. Full time RV--It is not for me. When I travel I want little stress. The RV is the opposite of that. Its like chasing a Baja 1000 every time I move it. However the sense of community is strong. We love our neighbors and freinds who snowbird at Islander.

I'm 52 and will likely work another 10--15 years

1. Where do you live now and why?
We own a home in Polson, Montana. That is our home base, but we are only there about 4-5 months a year. We spend 6 months as snowbirds living at the Islander in LHC. The rest is travel

2. Pros and Cons of your current place
Montana first;
Pros:
Flathead Lake is epic
Outside recreation is top-notch.
Health care is amazing. Short appointment times, great experience, good hospitals with two systems in town.
Dental same deal, but expensive
Working with the government is easy. Plan checks and permits issued the same day; very small town. A DMV lady lives across the street from us. There are only two people working in the DMV office. Most services are easy.
No wait at the launch ramp, we have 4 within a mile of the house.
Long summer days
No sales tax
Lifetime registration on vehicles (yes pay once for life)
Local electricity provider hydro power. Cheap propane, cheap water.
An abundance of quality water and food supply.
Low population.
Perception of safety from political unrest.
Cool old rusty flatbed trucks and UTVs are the normal mode of transportation.
Keeping up with the Jones means you have a bigger buck and bass on your wall. Your drift boat has carbon fiber oars. You have tracks for your Ranger. You have a dedicated plow truck.

Cons:
LONG winter nights and LONG winter.
Summer is not what most people from California would call summer. More like spring with a week or two of summer.
Snow
Cold
Bears
Little off roading
Zero decent Mexican food.
Lack of skilled labor available, you better be handy.
Houses /vehicles take a beating from the winter.
Grass grows too fast.
Locals don't like anyone from California, Texas, Washington, Oregon, The entire east coast. People who don't stay for winter are weak and unworthy.
A wide income gap. Absent Owners, Land Barrons, vs Reservation and Service Workers. Throw in the retired Sun Birds and you have few middle class people.

Lake Havasu Arizona
I think you all have this part covered. It fills in most of the stuff I am missing in Montana. The thing that scares me away from buying a house; is fear of no water, food, medical support, its 1200 miles to percieved safety from political unrest. Half of that is across the desert.

3. Where do you want to move to and why?

We are working our plan now. The best thing we have done the last 18 months was spend more time in places we thought we liked. I really like visiting the San Juan's and four corners region, but they don't have a secure water supply so it is a non starter. I will continue to visit, but not look at it as a area to live. I thought I wanted to winter in Baja, but LHC checks all the boxes and I can have guns.

We also like Northern Idaho a lot. Angie's parents have a compound there, in my mind its about the same as Montana.

Winter LHC, Summer Montana/Idaho

When I was younger a freind who worked for the EMWD in RivCo left his job and moved north because of fear of water supply. Until the last few years it was never a concern for me, but today it is near the top of my list of must haves.

4. Pros and Cons of the place you're moving to?

This is a very interesting thread. I’m enjoying reading what everyone has to say.

We left California 3 years ago and moved to Boulder City, NV. It is a great town and we love living here, but we are not happy with the state. We will stay here until our son is out of school (7 years) and see what happens then.

We originally wanted to be in southern Utah, but with my husband being an elevator mechanic there isn’t enough work for him there. We will always have to be somewhat close to a metropolitan area until he retires in 20 years.

The original plan for retirement was to full time rv for 6 months out of the year and then have a home base somewhere.

We do have one son though, so we will probably end up following him wherever he goes. His plan as of now is to join the Navy. If that happens, we are hoping for him to be based in San Diego. If we went back to San Diego, we would have to sell everything and either buy a condo in Coronado (my choice) or live on a boat in the harbor (my husband’s choice).

If that doesn’t happen, we will be heading east. My husband is interested in checking out loto. I’m interested in checking out the lake that @Crazyhippy lives on. I would also like to buy his Bernico lol

We will always live close to some body of water.
We also love off-roading in the Jeep and I like the openness and mountains in the western states.

Do you know where Avila Beach is?

It's a private/gated community out that way. Every house sits on a few acres and they all have views like that. You can't see any of the neighbors houses no matter which way you look.

His view out the kitchen faces to the south west. I got to watch the fog roll over the hills in the distance, having coffee every morning.

It's a slice of heaven for sure.

The central coast is Expensive! But there are areas similar to this all up and down the 840 miles of California coast line. According to Google, there are 420 public beaches on the coast.

Lots places to play and explore. 😎
I do...I like the Central Coast a lot! I have some family in Arroyo Grande and surrounding areas. it is an option for sure!

Happy to chauffeur y'all around anytime. We're a bit rural (5 miles to gas, restaurants and grocery store by land), but wouldn't think twice about an hour drive for something in LA. We have anything we want in less than that. From Symphony to drag strips, and everything in between.

Interesting question. Lots of interesting answers too.

One of a handful of reasons I have not been around much in the past year or two is I have been busy.

-My 90 year old Mom moved in with us and was here for almost 2 years. When we began final prep to sell in earnest this past summer she decided to go live with my sister in Oklahoma. She is happy, and that is all that matters. She doesn't want to live where we are going.
-I've had a few health challenges.
-I've been working on the place for 2 years. As in not a single trip for fun. Wife finally retired July 1st, after 32 years in her business. Her loyalty to the company kept her from pulling the pin last year, or we would be already be gone. The house went on the market Labor Day weekend, the same time a large wildfire took off about 30 miles south of us and inundated the area with smoke. We have had lookers and wanters but the right buyer...not yet.

All while watching the interest rates and the political chaos in DC and Sacramento drive buyers out of the market.
This place is a lot of work, it isn't like buying a home on a lot, and hiring a gardener to mow. Ya gotta be willing to do the work. A family with kids into the Ag lifestyle is the best fit for here..horses or a couple of steers, etc, and a gear head Dad.

The crazy thing is, this was, for about 30 of the 40 years we have lived here, (Nevada County) our "happy place".
Then, the infestation of leftists and other flatlander types took over, and the change is simply amazing, and sad as hell.
Seems crazy, ya get yer place exactly as ya wanted it and it is time to move.
We are going to pull it off the market Nov. 10th if it doesn't sell by then because I am not going to try to move over Donner Pass in the winter. Doing so would bring a Donner Party type winter, I am sure, and I ain't chaining trailers and trucks.
We will relist next spring, we hope.
I can tell you this.
Painting a house and a shop (with 14 ft walls) and the associated ladder work with a torn meniscus is not fun, and it does not promote healing.
I put 42 gallons of paint on this mofo. Bought an airless and Cindy helped when she could. Couldn't afford the paint bids. Those were a bit of a shock.

Men plan and God laughs.

So, for now, we will sit here, half-packed and wait, and see how big the coming "storm" is. We are not giving up.

Found a possible fully remote job that I could work anywhere I want.

Likely won’t pay what I’m making now. But it will be enough.

Only have to over come my daughters dad holding us back.

Good luck!! I'm trying to find me one of those remote jobs myself. I'm getting restless now that I finished my graduate degree in May. It's time to go back to work! Being a snowbird makes it rough, LOL.

If you are interested…… Viking Cruises is hiring remote reps to talk people through the cruise booking process and closing the deal. Pay is 85k to 145k. You get a salary plus commission. All the benefits. PLUS free Viking Cruises. All the info is on their website under “careers.” It sounds like a fun ‘work from home’ gig.

Here is something I can ad to this thread.

In the mid 1970’s, my Dad was racing District 37. Many of his friends were disgruntled with California. At least 5 of my Dads friends, and their families moved to Gardnerville Nevada. We started going there after they all moved there. It was a pretty cool place. There was plenty of trails for dirt bike riding and Lake Tahoe wasn’t to far to go boating for the day. Since one of my Dads friends was extremely well off…….. he had a huge ranch, with cattle, goats, and other farm animals. We had great times there. I am just mentioning this place, since I had not seen it in any posts. For all I know, Gardnerville has turned into suburbia……. But I highly doubt that.

Full disclosure - I am a LHC Realtor on Team RDP - that being said I am really not biased (no really). I'll explain in question 1.

1. Where do you live now and why? After spending the first part of my life in either the icy cold frozen tundra or incredibly humid, hot, and buggy Illinois (that's it the only two seasons in the midwest), I decided there had to be a better place to live. I searched south to Florida (still humid and buggy), a bit further west to Texas (still humid and buggy), waaaay further west to Southern California (nope - no too many people) then circled back to Arizona where I fell in love. The beauty of the desert, especially at each gorgeous sunset and warm, dry climate is just the spot for me! Took me a few cities within Arizona to find the right place. I have lived in Fountain Hills, Hualapai Mountains outside Kingman, and finally settled in my happy place Lake Havasu City.

2. Pros and Cons of your current place

The pros are: The daily sunshine and warm temperatures. Love having a lake oasis in the desert surrounded by mountains. Lots of local events including my favorite Desert Storm, Hot Air Balloon Festival, and Pyrotechnics Convention. I enjoy the hiking trails, the quality of my neighbors, and living in a small community.

The cons are: While I absolutely love our small community vibe, we do lack major commercial retail and air service. It is definitely a trade-off.

3. Where do you want to move to and why? At this time, I am very happy living here in Lake Havasu and have no plans to move out of town. I will move to a smaller home once the kids move out but for now, I am home.

4. Pros and Cons of the place you're moving to? Well, since I am not planning on moving out of town and only downsizing, the pros would be a smaller home would be much easier and faster to clean and maintain. But the cons would mean all my kids have grown up and that is good and bad. :)

Am I biased?

Been looking for the right place in Minden/Gardnerville for almost a year. Gets me closer to kids and grandkids. Sellers aren't really selling there.

Gardnerville is still pretty damn nice, and the trails are still epic. The downside is the whole area is infested with colonization. The area offers a pretty good balance of mountains and desert. There is really good fishing nearby. Boating on Topaz seems good. Run up the hill and get some fine wilderness to explore—no state income tax.

Have often considered the Hualapais.

I really enjoyed living in Lazy YU about halfway up the Hualapai Mountains. There are all kinds of wildlife, hiking, off-roading trails, the air is crisp and cool, the pine trees smell good, the views are incredible, and the mountain community is small but Kingman is just down the hill for supply runs. The only reason I left was the weather. At 5000 feet elevation, it still snows. I don't do snow anymore. LOL!

Other than the much needed AZ election process changes and the current annual windy and much cooler temps, south LHC still works for us. Some love the cooler weather. WTF, we didn’t move here seeking cooler weather, let alone living in a potentially Blue State.

I'm not in my happy place. Move eventually.
Looked at st george last month. Early next year we will go to Prescott to look.
We have some big life changes in the next few years becoming empty nester types.
Work is brutal. Busy and very unsatisfactory to the motivation factor.
I'm really not sure how much more I can take.
55 in 15 months. One if my pensions can start paying then. Until then we are searching for the happy spots.

I'm starting to lean towards less is more..

I do take some solace in the fact that Mohave County voted 78% for Lake. I'm with you on the weather as well, can't wait for spring.
