All I know is never buy a new one, one of the craziest deprecations I’ve seen.
I learned that a long time ago. Looking for a late 2000's.

Took a ride in my boss' new S560 Cab a couple of weeks ago, that's the one you want Grads.

Have an E63 2013. The last year they made a rwd drive sedan with the 5.5 twin turbo. Its a blast to drive.

The most money I ever lost on depreciation in a car was when I purchased a Mercedes CL 500. New it was $118,000. I purchased it when it was 2 years old for $68,000. The insurance company gave me $20,000 for it, after a drunk driver totaled it 5 years later. My average repair bill was $1100 and it seemed like there was a monthly repair. Geez, just to make one light go off on the dash cost $3500, since the fuel tank had to be removed to get to sensor. I will never ever own another Mercedes.

However, I do miss the unbelievable acceleration. The Mercedes CL series is a German Muscle Car, that I called The Corvette Killer. As a funny side note…… I got pulled over by La Paz County Sheriff doing 135mph on my way to the River and only got a warning! I should have gone to jail. Lol

And this is why I want the CL63 or 65! I already have two other Mercedes in the garage and am well aware of depreciation and maintenance costs. I think a CL with some light mods like an exhaust...etc would be a bad ass car. And I think they have hit the bottom of their price range.
Anybody know of one for sale?

They are at the bottomish.

You probably want the big brakes and crap, but a cheaper option is picking up a CL600.

The thing to do is start searching Carmax. I’ve heard a couple stories where they miss the pricing on these AMG cars.

The CL600's don't have the upgrades that the AMG cars have if I'm not mistaken. There's a 600 for sale a couple miles from my house. That V12 emblem is pretty sweet.

They do not. They make about the same power as the CL63 with more torque and look like an old mans car. Easily fixed with a set of wheels and a couple other small touches. They don’t have the big brakes like the AMG cars though. It is a more plush car for sure if you are just cruising it.

The 600 is a good option if you want something cheap and want to personalize it a bit.

For going straight that V12 might be impressive but for overall performance the V8 will outperform it any day of the week...

Here's a 63 I went and looked at. It was a little rough around the edges so to speak.

Good buddy of mine bought a new 2016 S Class AMG S63 convertible with all the bells and whistles that cost just over 200k. That car was a land based rocket ship / luxury car. Same car today sells for about 100k...

holy crap, I was thinking a lot more than $14k for one of those. That does sound like a lot of car for $14k
They average about $30K. The one in that ad is roached out because it's been sitting in a field. Needs a complete repaint.

Until the first repair bill exceeds the purchase price. Fuck that german junk.

That's an accurate statement. My son has a BMW with the ZF 8 speed automatic, that trans alone runs over 10k...

I've got a Mercedes in my garage that was $112K new, I paid $30K and it is in mint condition...let someone else take the depreciation hit.😁

I'm not too concerned with repairs, I got a guy for that.😜 And quite frankly he is the reason why I feel comfortable buying Mercedes.

My buddy has the AMG SL55 cabriolet the model I prefer in the Benz lineup. Restrictor [ speed limiter ] removed, it's a beast that can reach 200 mph. Now they can be bought on the cheap, just make sure everything works.

I don't have the AMG but I have the SL550 and it is a fun car to drive. It's the Silver Arrow model that they produced for one year and only 550 of them.

The low entry price takes into account the cost of ownership lying ahead. Total crapshoot.. Is it gonna be great? Is the car gonna drop to the ground with a suspension light on tomorrow? Who knows.....turn the key and find out :D

I'd love to play with one but I wouldn't be able to stomach the potential costs to keep it on the road. Some models are better than others. The air suspension is more reliable and cheaper to fix than the ABC hydraulic stuff, but even that has failures. There are kits out there to swap the air suspension over to coil-overs though, Arnott makes a setup. I looked for a while and then decided "not for me"

Just talked to my buddy and he told me the only issue he had with the car, replacing the alternator recently. Not too shabby for a 03 AMG. He has like 10 cars and 3 m/c plus 2 race cars and this one is his favourite for cruising around town.

Other than depreciation, MBZ are badass cars. Just need to know the right people for different things🙂 You can easily get 130 hp and 150 TQ out of a 63.

Whoa. I've seen those first two but not the 65. Thanks.
Don't buy a CL 63 with a normally aspirated 6.3 engine. They have numerous problems. If you want a CL 63 get the one with the bi turbo 5.5 engine.

They ran the M156 engine in the CL 63 from 2007 to 2010. In 2011 they moved to the M157 engine.

I had a 2005 E55, with the 5.5 supercharged engine. The M113k motor. An absolute amazing engine that was a work horse. They later introduced the 6.3 M156 engine normally aspirated engine. It was plagued with problems. When they moved forward in 2011 2012, they went to the M157 engine with is the 5.5 bi turbo engine. It also has proved to be a workhorse with very low maintenance.

This is all true @GRADS. The M156 is considered the least reliable AMG engine ever built.

That’s what I was gonna say. If you’re cool with the theory of “throw it in the gutter and go get another” when it finally has an issue.

They don’t make much sense to keep pouring money into.

And if you’re just wanting a go fast car, grab a C5/C6 vette and do some basic work to it. Easy to maintain and work on, and with some basic head / cam / long tubes, you’ll be way ahead on the performance

You can buy some really nice chains with those monthly $600-$1200 Repair bills you won’t be spending with the vette

Run away as fast as possible, cost more per mile than a TOP FUEL HYDRO to maintain.

You can also look at an F10 M5. I'm a Bimmer guy but those cars must be kinda reliable if 2 techs I know at BMW told me to just get that instead of the F10 535 I bought. 550hp stock

I've had my fair share of BMW's but I prefer MB over them. Plus I'm looking for a coupe not a 4 door.

2012 and newer have stronger internals
You guys obviously know more than me on these motors so I ask you, how bad are they? I'm seeing a lot of these 2008-2010 cars with 100,000+ miles.
