We've been checking out breeders and of course nothing but glowing remarks from them. The dogs are always healthy and are so smart they could steal a bicycle.
We know AKC means nothing, in fact maybe even a red flag.

We're interested in GIANT, like the size of a Volkswagen.

Any experiences or takes or recommendations?
Thanks, much appreciated.

My take or recommendation is to look for a breeder that actually works and titles it’s dogs.
It’s a working breed dog.
Look for working titles, not show wins.

Are you looking for a German shepherd or a King Shepherd ? Most German shepherds top out around 100 pounds for males. King Shepherds are much larger.

Before you get attached, get the dog x-rayed for potential hip dysplasia issues. I had two large breed (120-130 lbs) shepherds and one of them had constant hip problems. Both were great dogs, and as loyal as they come, but due to their size, both needed to be put down before the age of 8.

I have experience working with police service dogs and can point you in the right direction seeking a vendor or breeder. Send me a PM with details of what you’re looking for.

https://www.lundborg-land.com I have a male from here that I adopted last year that is a great dog. We constantly get stopped by people asking about him when we have him out. The owner is great and she has excellent dogs.

I had a neighbor that had a white GS that was monster size. Thankfully I got along with it and them. It bit one of their other friends and they got sued and lost their homeowners insurance. They sold and had to rent until the dog finally got old and died.

I love my dogs but thats a commitment. Not sure what choice I would make in that situation.

This. Im not knowledgeable about giant GS but AKC and breeders of AKC GS have ruined that breed. Very sad to watch them at akc shows

Growing up we always had/have big Germans. All of them great family dogs and protectors. Even good rabbit, gopher, and squirrel killers haha.

Sammie the one we have now just weighed 127 at the Vet. Also they have all been rescues from the GS rescue.

Highly recommend rescuing.

Mine doesn't like people, he likes to bite them. Look for working titles on the parents. Also there is health testing to see if the parents are free from diseases like hip dysplasia, make sure the parents have those tests as well.

Funny some breeders make no mention of King and call them Giant.
150 lbs will work.

I have known Linda for many years. I have bought two GSD's from her. She has incredible lines and her dogs are very impressive. They are essentially German working lines. Be very careful as many "American" GSD's have different characteristics. I also was stopped many times by people asking about my dogs. I used to walk Gunner around the channel and was constantly asked questions. Just this past month, I was at my grandsons baseball game and saw a woman with a 6 month old GSD. I knew immediately it was from lundborg. I asked the woman and she verified it was. I then called Linda and spoke with her for a few minutes. Give her a call. 951 443 4318.

Cheers, Steve

This is Gunny next to our lab Hunter.
Not sure if he is considered Giant, but he always was much bigger then any dog at the dog park. He was my uncles dog, but my uncle couldn’t keep him. My uncle lost his other dog in a car accident on the way back from Havasu, and was heartbroken. So we kept as long as we could until we found him a home with a retired Police Officer who use work with K9s. When I have visited him, he still knows who I am. But, he has a great life! His own room too! Was always sad we couldn’t keep him.

He was a big softy. My 8lb maltipoo use to order him around and he listened. He wouldn’t growl at the pool man, even if it was a new guy. He was pretty submissive for a German Shepherd. Maybe growing up with the lab? He was train as well, he really enjoyed being trained.

I’d definitely get pet insurance for any extra large dogs. Their hips and arthritis when they get older will be expensive.

I’ll try to find the breeder my uncle got him from.

Mine is a long hair from Czech working lines. I don't recommend long haired GSD's. I brush mine daily and enough hair comes off him, I could make ten dogs!

My GSD's were good with my grandkids. I'll see if I can find a few pics. I think I have one from when I still had both. Loaded up in the truck getting ready to go to Havasu. Cody was getting old.

Mine is about 100lbs...… My street doesn't have much traffic. When he see's a car, he goes ballistic. I walk him daily. The other day a truck was driving by, my dog goes ballistic. He broke his choke chain. Luckily he has good recall...………………..

I have always had 2 or more Shepherds at a time but if it will be a only dog get a Male. I just did some looking online for a pup. I always like to see lots of pics of the parents. I have had quite a few Shepherds and been around a lot growing up. Friends parents were breeders other friends always had 2. The giant ones usually have longer hair. My all black is long hair and crazy how much they shed. If you plan on taking dog everywhere including the RV look for one not so high drive. Some are neurotic and will run circles they have so much energy. Need lots of exercise. The all black and dark sables I have had are more chill.

In all honesty, it all comes down to you as a dog person. Any dog can be the best dog in the world, or be the worst asshole dog in the world.

I have a Belgian shepherd, similar to the german but slightly smaller. These dogs are breed to work, lots of energy and strong as fudge when they want to. Requires alot of time, walks and activity. Many of the ones coming from a good breeder have the hunt and aggressiveness in them to work as guard/police dogs. This is absolutely nothing to be afraid of but something to be aware of. It will be on its guard, and wants to keep the ”herd” your family togheter.
As mentioned keep an eye for the hips, common problem, a dog in pain can be the the nicest but a touch in the wrong spot can make it angry.

Good luck! Post a pic of the little one when it arrives[emoji847]

We had a 120 lb male who lived to be 15 and had none of the hip issues shepherds are known for. If at all possible, look at other (older) members of the line to see if they have hip issues and how aggressive they are. Our's was a big teddy bear but he was so big he was still a great guard dog. He was tall enough to look through the side window of most cars and would scare the hell out of anyone who drove up to the house. The shedding issue is no joke, we had to sweep the patio daily in the spring time and taking him in the Moho was out of the question half the time. Overall great dog though, I miss him for sure.

I have had them my whole life. GS need a daily job, or they will make their own job which is typically bad dog habits. Lol. I want another one but won't get one until I have at least an acre for the dog to enjoy.
