Some cool old rides there.
Any surfer I've seen with a van is driving a VW without the dingleberries around the windshield.:p:D

In high school we used to ride around in my friends old VW bus (worth a mint now if he still had it).

What made it so special was it had been driven under something and the top of it had a slice right down the middle of the roof from front to back.

Imagine the shape of a mid sixties VW bus with a slice from front to back on the roof - we called it the "toaster".

For more reasons that just the slice in the roof;)

I had a '77 B-van as well. I loved it and so did my kids. It was fun seeing the moms faces when I picked them up from school in it. I plan to build another when a clean, original shorty crosses my path.

Went to a Van rally/party with my older cousin back in the 70's who had one of those early Ford Falcon vans. It was at a big parking lot for a grocery store or something similar up in the San Gabriel Valley, up by Alhambra maybe. The best part, except for getting stoned, a local as yet unknown band named Van Halen was playing the get together.

A friends girlfriend said they used to play backyard parties she went to in high school. I wonder how they sounded back then.

I'd be lying if I said I remembered how they sounded...it only became a cool story to tell after they hit and we realized that we'd seen them.
I was never crazy about the early vans, didn't like the idea of my knees being the front line of defense in a wreck. I understand others liking them, I was into '56 Ford trucks back in the 70s.

The year was about 1977, my best buddies older brother had a brand new tricked out surfer van, had the carpeted walls on the inside with custom cut outs where he stuck pictures of marijuana buds, real stoner dude. So my buddy and I decide to roll with him at lunch to get some concert tickets at Sears, while we were there his brother says you guys ever try honey oil? we said no but what the hell lets try it, long story short he dropped us off at school I was so stoned out of my mind I couldn't even see the chalkboard, never ever smoked that shit again or rode in his SURFER VAN!

Let me start off by saying I had three, and without a doubt the best vans ever made were the 1971 and later Dodge vans. The Ford in the Chevy or not very good the Ford be in the worst as you could not fit 1 foot on the floor because of the size of the engine compartment compartment. it was a terrible driving position. the Dodge at superior visibility and great mechanics back then. The chevys rusted within two years.

The best was a B200, of you can find one now, grab it. If you get one and it still has the old two barrel carburetor and want to keep a carbureted system, change the intake manifold them put on an Edelbrock four barrel. that was the only minor mechanical issue the two barrels or temperamental at times. But this was early 70's and it was all we had.

My first was a 66 Ford Econoline painted school bus yellow, on Friday nights and always found a spot then At Tin Can beach, which is now known as Bolsa Chica State Beach.

As life takes us many twists and turns, my Huntington beach house overlooks about a half a mile away the exact spot where I used to park at.

The rest are memories.

It was a guy in the early seventies in the valley that had a plain white early Dodge van. Had slots and big and Little's. Open the side doors and there was a six pack behind the seats, on top of a Mopar 440. It hauled the mail.

No old surfer vans but I have owned 4 1978 and newer bus/vans. They have been my daily drivers since 03.
Currently drive an 01 GMC Limited Explorer conversion van. Comfy and convenient.
Old man had one as a kid. So did all of his friends. I can remember going to a conversion shop with my old man in the late 70s to check out a buddys rig getting done like it was yesterday.

My friend had a VW bus senior year in high school. His father owned a small used car sales lot. Friend had access to the auctions and bought a wrecked 911 turbo. He dumped the motor into the bus. Street racing was popular at the time. He painted the bus purple. At the race meet up spot it soon became don't race the purple bus!

...Never owned a van but road all the way from Malibu to Canada laying on top of huge TNT amplifiers for a big concert that was supposed to happen in Vancouver...1970(Joplin/Hendrix etc)
...’69 Dodge long van...318 torqueflite...
...It was called The Green Weiner for some reason...but had Slippery Jack Song Company painted on the side (music publishing company)
...That thing was bulletproof until one of the roadies lead footed it all the way across Texas at 100 miles an hour and put a rod through the side of the block...What did we do...found all the pieces ...welded up the block and continued to use it...
...When it wasn’t full of amplifiers and guitars it had a mattress on the floor...
...The mattress got a lot of use as I recall:rolleyes:...

I had a 1978 Dodge B200 StreetVan, 360 V8 red paint/ red interior. If I ever found it I would buy it back in a heartbeat. I loved that van; it loved gas.

Anybody remember the van-ins at Crazy Horse in Havasu??? I remember going but don't remember anything that happened. I was a member of West Coast Vans. '72 Ford, All around Craigers with Mickey Thompson tires. Side pipes, Port holes, rear wing, named "Rumor Hazzit". Pulling a 20 mini daycruiser.
