Heading to Home Depot this weekend to pick up a new grill. Are they any brands to stay away from? What's the best? Weber seems to be priced much higher than any other brand, does it really make that much of a difference?

Thanks,

SHEP

Buy the Weber and it will be money well spent. Those things are indestructible.

Stay away from Char Broiler. My parents bought me one for a Christmas present after I got my first place a couple years ago. It sucks. The burners are FAR too close to the grill so it flares up constantly, the coating they use on the metal is so crappy it's all gone and the metal "flavor bars" are rusting away. The only reason I still have it is cause I can't afford a new one right now.

TX Gulf Coast is a hard environment for grills of any kind with our humidity and salt air. Rust and corrosion are many times worse. The biggest issues are light stamped metal components that corrode worse after being heated.

I steer clear of grates that aren't cast iron or SS. Light wire grates burn out in a year. Burners are the other component I want to be cast iron or heavy metal. Burners corrode quickly once the heat burns off the cheap plating on stamped steel.

I've bought cheap and expensive of various brands and it all comes down to those 2 features on the life of the grill.

I've had Weber Genesis for 10 years and it has been flawless. Starts every time and cooks more evenly than any other gas grill I've owned. Just take care of it, clean and service the burners and it will serve you well.

Me too. Had it for 8 years and still looks new

X2 I spent a chip on a stainless version about 10 years ago. Looks like dog shit living so close to the beach but replaced the grills with a company called Grillgrate.com... night and day difference on flare up and flavor....no more hot spots, pretty even heat.

I'll have to look into them. I'm sure it'll be cheaper than a new grill and I do like how hot the grill gets (I typically get up to about 650 with all 3 burners on full tilt).

I bought a Char Broil Infrared grill a few years back and it's great. I put raw meat on it and when I take it off, the meats cooked.

I'll confess to not being good about performing regular cleaning and service on my BBQs. But I'm getting tired of buying these cheap one that you end up tossing every couple of years.

Seriously considering a Weber Genesis, but not sure if I should go with stainless or cast iron grates ?? Which one have you found more durable ?

I personally am rocking a charbroil infrared, very pleased with it. All the comments on the Weber Genesis are spot on, great grill and deserving of its price tag. The main thing with the mid range grills is most will deteriorate pretty quick when the whole budget for the thing was spent on the cheap stainless, if I am shopping on the cheaper end, try and avoid the stainless and get more bang for the buck. We all know that it is more like stain-less than stainless. Like cars, boats, and everything, all depends on the budget, under a grand I would go Weber, even though I am happy with my infrared. Not all infrared's are equal, there are three different design types really, Home Depot, Lowes, and Sears carry one each. The fire box and grill grates are different on each three.

My Weber came with cast iron grates and after about 8 years they're starting to break down, but I do have an older Weber 22" kettle bbq that I stole from home when I moved out about 30 years ago that is probably 45 years old now and the top grill (which is stainless), it is still in tip top condition without a single speck of rust. When I do replace my cast iron grates, I'm going to blow my wad and get stainless grates.

I have a Built-In TEC infra-red grill. I've had it 16 years now. Made in USA :thumbsup

It's a Sterling II which isnt available but this is the newer model.

I have heard Fire Magic are pretty good also.

I ran across this Swiss Grill for the same price as the Genesis which comes with a infra-red side burner.

Go with the stainless grates. I got a Genesis from a customer after we built Him a custom out door kitchen. The grates are rusted bad in 1 spot rest of grill is great. Always covered and only 3 years old. They sell the grates at Lowes for $60. I was debating calling and see if they would send some new ones as it specifically says on the Genesis 3 year grate warranty.

If I wanted a quality BBQ I'd get a weber.

LOL.. I love the humor of the RDP inmates.. :D

That is scary as shit right there.. IF the propane bottle goes off, that's a monster BNAG..

I don't know why I always do it, but I always buy the cheapie BBQ's with the stupid knick knack features.. The last one I bought had the little blue LED lights that light up the knobs.. LOL These things are junk to cook on, but that makes cooking on them part of the challenge. :D

There used to be a membership store called Fedco back in the day - they sold pre made hamburger patties that were guaranteed to flare up like that. They started the size of a large taco sized tortilla and ended up the size of of those little 2-bite taco tortillas. Almost as thin, but they packed in the grease.

I researched the heck out of this a couple years ago and went with a DynaGlo on amazon. A lot of ex-weber owners swear by this grill. Read the reviews but you won't go wrong if this is the size grill you're looking for. I bought two of then within the last two years, one for the river and one for my primary. I love it. Side burner also.

Funny, I see no votes for the Weber Summit - a step above the Weber Genesis. I also have a Weber Performer kettle when charcoal is called for. Can't go wrong with Weber, and made in America.:D

I had a Vermont castings grill. It was nice but have to say it's the only time I didn't go with Weber and regretted it.

This. I have the 5 burner one. $379 shipped via Amazon. Mine cooks very evenly, and has held up very well.

My one complaint is that while the grills are stainless and are high quality, the spacing is a bit wide.

+1. Love my Weber Genesis too. Had it about 9 years. Starts every time.

x10 Weber Genesis. I've had mine for a few years and it's still rock solid. Mine has the extra sear burner if you need to crank it to melting lava levels. Grates are still flawless. Added the extra cabinets for more storage and counter surface (really just looks cool)

November 1998 I bought and installed a Turbo, built in natural gas stainless grill with cast iron burners, from BBQ's galore. It has seen heavy use for 17 + years; still kicks ass. The only part I ever replaced was the regulator which isn't even part of the actual grill. The printing and graphics are all worn off from being outdoors for so long but that damn grill and our Viking Range are only two items in our house worth a damn. It may be worth taking a look at the Turbos at BBQ galore but you can't go wrong with a Weber either. Im now in the market for a "Green Egg".

Funny side story my daughters are both married now and and their husbands always joking/fighting over who gets that Damn grill when die!

Smoker on the right, 3 burner gas on the left, side burner all the way on the left. I made the smoker box on the far right to do offset style smoking, and the aluminum tray on the front to hold my beer while I cook.

Available at Home Depot for around 300 bucks...

You pleased with the smoker side with the indirect box?

Yes, I love it. I have turned people that didn't like tri tip into tri-tip fanatics... Everything comes out juicy, and you really get the distinct flavor of the different types of wood. If you don't want to use the offset, it has the direct smoker tray in the main box that is adjustable.
