Who has one in their shop? I want one but finding they are not real easy to come by unless you order a new one online (some are lesser quality). The high quality older anvils cost a BUNCH and you need to find a way to get one shipped to you.

I have a 95lb one. It's a 1890's Hay Buden from the rail Co. Use it a lot really. The knife making craze made the prices skyrocket. For new, a farriers anvil is best bang for the buck.

What are you looking to use it for? Railroad rail makes a good anvil for straightening and stretching, but usually have to make a horn.

Thru the power of RDP we could probably get it to St. George…. Fairly easy….

I have rail if you want to get into making anvils for sale on RDP. Got a bunch here in Parker that needs to go.
How big of a piece if rail do you have ? Will it fit in the back of a Yugo? and NOT make it pop a wheelie….

LoL

I would if we had a local yard but here in southern Uturd we don't have much of anything local. There are some tracks north of here, about 25 miles away. I might ride up there and see if they are replacing any rail.

I'll look to see if I have any small pieces laying about.

I'd advise him to stay away from the stock yards of Chicago. :)
Can't post the video, but I saw one of the contract security guards in his truck chasing some thieves running on foot. He mowed them down and ran into a chainlink fence which rolled his truck on top of the thieves. Talk about a payday.

This is 4'' base x 24'' long. I brought it back to the house so you can get it or I'll bring it or send it your way.

I might have a 5.750 base 'x 24'' piece at the ranch but I believe I gave it to someone. If You want the larger base model I'll need to cut you a piece or find some at the ranch.

I've got one that has been in the family for a 100 years I suppose. It is broke but was fastened together some how. I use it some, not as much as I used to when I had lousy planter opener disk bearings. The guy that runs my chain saw shop of choice has the nicest one I ever saw. It is not impossible for someone to steal your anvil for scrap metal. I know someone it happened to.

When making your stand, measure it out so that the strike face is where your hammer would fall with your elbow close to a 90. Mine is still on an oak round, staked with RR spikes, but for a guy from 1900...maybe 5'4"? Been salvaging some 4x10's to make a taller one. If you're wailing on it for a couple hours at the wrong height, you feel it in your back and shoulders for a few days :(

My history teacher told me of an old man he knew that bought an anvil from the Sears catalogue back in the 1930's-40's with a lifetime warranty. It broke 50+- years later and they had to track him down an equivalent. Took them about a year but they honored it. Kind of cool.

the best anvils are forged, they ring when you hit them and your hammer will have more bounce. Cast anvils are cheaper, when you hit then there is just a thump and less hammer bounce.

Absolutely not true. They do not rebound near as good as a real anvil.
I have both here. A 3lb singlejack does rebound considerably more on my old anvil compared to a rail. If you're working hot steel, probably not noticeable, as the work material is softer and draws out. Cold steel though, big difference.

Try making something on both. I would wager will take you double the time using the track.

I'll make a video of this naturally aged, in the heat of the Arizona Outback, sliver of a rail, just to see if your theory rings true. :)

I've become very fond of my vices and not sure what it would be like to give any of them up for adoption. ;)

Just got thru testing the Rockwell hardness of your future vice and even with a leather mallet. It ''Rings True'' :)
