I try my best to stay somewhat stay clued-in on scams, since they seem to be coming from every angle nowadays.

This one struck me as odd / unique so thought I'd share . . . maybe it's old news to many here . . .

I guess on some money sharing apps like Venmo, PayPal, Zell etc . . . . the scammers send you money and then pretend they did it by mistake.
Then they ask for you to 'just send a portion of it back' and keep the rest for your inconvenience . . . then somehow they cancel the original transaction & dupe you for the cash you send.

I 'think' I got that explanation somewhat correct, sorry if it's clear as mud . . . .(these scams are getting so complex, I'm having a hard time even understanding them).

The scams keep coming because they work.

Years ago my middle daughter asked me where she could find a Western Union office. I informed her NOBODY legit uses that service, so why are you asking?

She said she got a job offer on Care.com, they sent her a check for more than the cost of the "wheelchair" she was instructed to buy and she was sending back the overage.

I drove her to our local Wells Fargo where she had deposited the check and had the bank manager explain the scam to her (and waive the soon to be returned check fee)

The scams work, so they will keep coming.

With AI and these deep fakes--we have set up a "Safe word"
We even went so far as to set it up the old fashioned way too--in person and through the mail.
This way we could be confident that AI was not picking up emails or calls.

My Tutu in Hawaii was almost hit for $1800 when she got a call I was in jail. The voicemail she got sounded just like me and told her not to call my parents, sister, etc. Gave her instructions on how to send money. She is 94 now and does not drive. When she asked my Uncle for ride to the bank and the store--he asked why and put it together.

So if, or when this happens again. The email reply or call back only includes "Safe Word". Nothing else. Everything else you hear or read is a lie.
Then we all change passwords on emails, accts, etc.. cause someone got hacked somewhere.

Trust no one.
I'd venture to guess 50% of emails & texts I get are targeting the gullible trusting people.......or selling shit I dgaf about whatsoever.
Downloading ten zillion phone apps is also something I will not do, period.

It’s amazing how many subscriptions I have that have all “expired” and if I just simply click the link they provide, I can re-enter my credit card information and not lose access to Hulu, Peacock, YouTube, TV, etc.

Not to mention all the packages that seem to have some due shipping fees that must be paid before they can be delivered.

The subscription ones make me laugh because I don't have any of those.😂

Yep. I have no bank apps on my phone. I don't send or receive money from any of the cash apps.

If someone sends you money, check your account, if it’s a sizable amount, transfer it to another account leaving only $1 in that account. If they demand the money back, tell them to go pound sand.

I never knew you could cancel a Venmo or Zelle.

I thought once it was gone it's gone?

That was my understaning as well.
Maybe they found a workaround, and hopefully it'll be closed up.

Funny thing thinking about it now . . . a couple years ago I accidently sent some money on venmo to the wrong person . . . same exact name, I just had his 'User Name' incorrect.
I messaged the person and explained my mistake and I wrote it off as a 'Stupid Attack' not expecting him to return it.
A couple weeks later the person sent me the money back with a note saying, 'Sorry it took so long'. 🙃🤷‍♂️

Totally get what you’re saying—these scams are getting trickier every day.

A couple of years ago my Wife's bank account was hit for $2000.00, a Venmo transaction to a woman in Missouri? Thought the money was gone, called the bank not a lot of help, then the woman in Missouri emailed and said I don't know why you sent this, and returned the $$$$🤔

Not sure if we're supposed to welcome bump bots or report them, so I'll do both.
Welcome!

The sad thing about these scams, apparently they work, or the scammers wouldn’t continue to send them.

It's a numbers game, the more you can get to see the scam the more that will intentionally or unintentionally fall for it.
