Not that familiar with snakes. They don’t freak me out that bad, probably because I’ve only seen a few in my life.

Are the gopher snakes not aggressive towards humans? Do they not bite or have fangs or poison? I mean, I presume a rattler kills rodents too. Why is one better than the other?

Gopher Snakes although not poisonous, are very angry and hostile, no front fangs, but sharp teeth, their bite will break the skin and feel like a really hard pinch, but you'll live...

Just kill all snakes and let god sort them out. Screw em.. At least that's what I do in Texas, there's bunch of poisonous species here that I've never seen in CA and don't care to find out about.

Will they strike out at you if you walk past them like a rattler?

Pick it up, they love to be held :)
Well not always they don't  I've encountered a couple around the place that get damn snippy --- or nippy, they flare their heads which flattens them, they shake their tails and I verbally warn them. You want to act like a rattler, I might just treat you like one buddy. 🤣
Also they've gotten testy while trying to herd them off the road for their own good, so no, I've decided not to pick one up, despite the stories of them often being good natured. The Kings seem far more mellow.

Yep and even shake their tail to fake you out!
I've wondered if that's how the rumors got started about not all rattlers having rattles ?? Because when they flatten their heads and shake their tails, it's caused me to do a double take.

Yeah I was being sarcastic...I am kinda a snake enthusiast, I would have more if I could (wife is terrified of them), so currently I just have one ball python...I would say of wild snakes, rattlers included, the Gopher Snake is more aggressive...they have a very mean temper and 100% try to pass themselves off at rattlers....

There's rattle-less rattle snakes on Catalina Island that don't make any noise.
I believe they are unique to Catalina only.
Gopher Snakes are cool . . . had one as a pet . . . it could be testy at times.

I see the occasional Black Racer around here. Small, yet blindingly fast. Thank the Lord that rattlers can't move that fast or we'd be screwed. Curious I looked them up, seems their attitude is so pissy that it clearly states, if you attempt to pick one up, it will fucking bite you.🤣 Of course I think you'd have to be "The Flash" in order to grab one in the first place.

The Rosey Boas I've encountered around here seem to be taking Xanax, not sure if you could piss them off if you hit them with a stick.
I enjoyed picking up snakes and lizards as a kid, as an adult I'm quite content to watch them and if it's a rattler and around my house, he best hope he and I don't meet up. Up at my ranch, or at Havasu, I grant safe passage.

Crotalus Calalinensis, hope the hell they stay over there  It's been that distinctive rattling that's saved my ass a few times.
Does say they're relatively small with mild venom. Never seen one in the water over there and that's where it would have to find me. ;)

I don't remember who told me this... But growing up we were pretty much taught that if they have a triangle head they are poisonous.. and if they don't have a triangle head they aren't. I don't care what kinda head they have I try not to go near them.. But if they have the triangle they die if they are on my property..

I'm hesitant to type this, because I don't want to jinx it.. but in 11 years of living in Havasu, we have never had a snake at my house.. Point in fact the last and only snake I've seen is that one that tried to get on Shintooo's boat where he was beating it with a go pro.. LOL

Rosy Boas and California King Snakes are my favorite to find in the wild, they are both very mellow and can be handled with ease...when I was young I had a King Snake that I caught as a pet for years, until one day it escaped and lived in our house for a few weeks until I finally found it...that day my mom said I dont care what you do with that snake I dont want it here when i get home from work...lol

Do you do pest control at the house? I understand it’s a fine balance.
