Well I've been on here for months reading and reading and learned a lot. I've kind of gone against some advice given and but hopefully it will work out in the end. I want to thank Brent, Henry and Cliff for advice and taking the time to talk to me.

History of me is I'm 35 and grew up in Lake Arrowhead, I saved my lunch money, raked pine needles and shoveled snow to buy my first boat at 12. It was a 14ft aluminum boat with a Johnson 9.9 that had fallen into the lake but I got the Motor for free and managed to get it going. A good friend of ours had a 21ft Howard v-drive with a 460 and I use to ski behind it and I was hooked always wanted one or a Schiada.
It's finally my turn to build the boat of my dreams, I picked up a 1977 Spectra 20 for dirt cheap and yes it's a jet/motor box but I bought it thinking any 40yr old boat might as well have new stringers so this will allow me a clean slate to work with. Also there is no wood in the transom which makes it easier to add having a clean slate. My next dilemma is whether to go v-drive or I/O.
The only thing keeping me from going v-drive is the lack of knowledgeable/reliable help in my area (high desert, ca). I have a 460, velvet drive, steering, shaft log, champion box and basically the complete drivetrain from a spectra 24 in my garage I could use. I have noticed that my motor box is in really good shape and my floor was glassed in very well. If I go I/O would it be possible to just run the motor box? I still would like to add a bulkhead and some gunwales for more support to make my deck more rigid. Any insight or advice would be great at this point right now I'm cleaning the hull out, stripping it and will begin to glass in my holes out back. I have already pulled my pump and motor. Thanks for reading my short novel, more pics tomorrow.

Awesome! Looking forward to your build. The v-drive conversation is going to be some $$$ even if you have the materials, but you come to the right place. There are plenty of guys on here that can help you set it up. There are plenty of Bravo 1’s out there for sale, IMO I would probably go that route, but just depends how fast you want to get it in the water. You can always leave it as a jet too. Plenty of resonable priced parts for pumps too. It all boils down to $$$$ and time. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words and honestly my biggest set back is drilling the shaft log. Other than that I think with the help of some members I could pull off the v-drive and yes it would take longer and cost more which is why a bravo looks better everyday lol. What do you think about just using the motor box if I go I/O?

Drilling the shaft log ,(hole), is not that hard, just need to find someone with the tools needed. I did my own at home. Also need to make sure you get the correct strut and mount it in the correct location. Bergeron in AZ. is a good source for this, (strut and information). Sounds like you already have some of the main parts.

I have heard of Bergeron and planned on getting a stainless shaft log and strut from them since I have all brass stuff from the 24.

Going to have a swim step and brackets for sale and the bow rail which seems to look low profile compared to others I've seen.

IMG_3590.JPG IMG_3592.JPG 3hrs, 10 bottles of water and a sweaty ass later and I got the intake out and gutted the inside and transom. Going to cut the tanks out next and figure out what to do about those. After walking around in this hull more I've decided full stringers they weren't kidding when they said these things flex no wonder my deck is cracked so damn bad. More to come....

If you go v-drive or I/O you will want 4 full stringers, I would also still do the bulkheads, shit since you are that far in I would do 4 stringers even if all you do is put a jet back into it.

They were pretty flexy flyer when they only had motor boxes.

Don't sweat the shaft hole, if you want V-drive (the best drive :)) set the strut first and make sure you measure 10 times, after that your home.

Got a few hours in on her today cut a majority of the floor out and found the famous gallon of water sitting in the hull. Hope to have the rest out and the tanks by the end of the week. I have to figure out what to do with the old gas in the tanks should be fun......

I xalled Imc

I called Imco in San Dimas about building a pair of 20-25 gal tanks for a 79 I was looking at a couple weeks ago. Their phone quote was $1200.00 for the pair. You could also call Brian at tank it in havasu.
with all the work your doing that boat will handle big power if so desired. If/when you have tanks built it would be a good idea to plan ahead for big power fuel demands and necessary fuel supply. Have a couple large threaded bungs (1/2"-1") added/welded in for larger fuel pick up tubes and returns if running elec. fuel injection and/or high vol. mechanical. Even if you don't plan on big'r power the next owner may and to have that already done would be a considerable advantage. They can always be bushed to accept a smaller fuel system too. Win/win in my opinion. Good looking boat, enjoy your project. I would have been in the same "boat" as you had the seller accepted my offer. These boat look so good in the water.

Thank you for the advice and I plan of talking to imco eventually just trying to get a lot of glass work done before anything and then figure all that out. Hoping to get my stringer, transom and glass materials this week. Hp numbers hoping to be around 600 n/a but we shall see.

Well I'm really itchy floor is out all the way and grinded out the old floor supports and the transom was sanded down on the outside today. Also cut the intake hole clean. Doesn't look like much but took about 5-6hrs so it is lol!

baby powder prior to grinding helps a good bit as well as a tyvek type suit but hydration can become a concern in the heat. Looks good, your really getting after it. Keep up the good work. Do you plan to install new stringers with it on the trailer?

Thank you for the compliment and advice. I've read numerous things on taking the boat off the trailer to do the stringers and leaving it on. I'm leaning more towards leaving it on just because the hull has no structure and that's where it's sat the longest. I've heard it's good to take it off and block the stern and the bow to let the hull relax but I could also see that allowing it to bow. Any advice on that would be great for more insight. Thanks

Lots and lots of grinding and it will continue. Want to start glassing all the holes next week possibly. Going to start small to get the feel and move to the bigger ones. Itchy is an understatement!

the itch is fiberglass's subtle reminder what a true, dedicated boating badass you truly are. haha
nice prep work. If the trailer was built correctly and fits/supports the hull very good then I would say that is your best bet. If you support it at the typical 3 points, corners @ transom and keel up near the bow, you could always check for sag on the strakes with a good 8'+ straight edge and if necessary add some support to flatten/straiten them out some as necessary.
Its coming along nicely, keep up the work.

Well been sanding and grinding away, got my transom cut out finally, stared glassing in the pump intake hole so no more jet boat. More to come, thanks to everyone for the advice and good feedback, especially Dennis for putting up with my questions.

Very nice job you are doing on your Spectra. We almost have the same boat. I think you will be happy going the V Drive route but as others have said it will be more costly in the process. But if you can pick up some of the needed items used it should help keep your restoration on track. I look forward to following your build keep up the great work. Heres a few pics of mine Engine and Velvet Drive currently out for rebuilding

Don’t Bev scared, you have grinders right :). Remember when you bed those down don’t put so much weight on them that you squeeze all the resin out. The better you fit the stringers the easier your glass work will be as wells. Remember to ruff those things up with 24 or 36 so you get a good bond, you won’t see the grinding scratches thru the glass either.

Thanks very much guys appreciate the compliments. Boat is pretty much all original except for the interior and carpet. Also that is the original gelcoat from 1976.

Notched the transom for the stringers and laminated a piece of 1/4 walnut over it. Not sure if I like it, it's kind of dark. Reminds me of late 70s bar furniture lol. More coming....

If I could keep my wood grain I would and the transom would look bitchen and match, might have to rethink this one.
