All,

My Outdrive Serial Number is 0D571098

I am trying to swap out part #5 on the list.

I ordered part number 864319 since my serial number ends with 571098.
  • This seal number is used on drives with serial numbers: [0M400412] & Up
But what came out of the upper drive is 2 of part number 66302
  • This seal number is used on drives with serial number ([0M400411] & Below)
Is there a service bulletin where Mercruiser changed from having 2 seals back to back to just 1 double - seal?

Maybe the shop that did this before did not pay attention to my serial number and should have been using 864319.

The old part number has a spring only on one side and they were installed back to back

If they have the same OD, and the shaft carries the same PN for both early and late, I'd run it. Making a seal that is a double lessens the chance of them being put in the wrong direction as well as damaging them.
As a warning though, I don't have a lot of Merc experience, but driven a lot of seals.

Because your serial number starts with 0D and both are still listed separately and not superseded into each other, you ought to use the 0M and under as yours is lower/older than the 0M serial number range… 0D/your serial number is from 1991 while 0M started around 2002ish.. it’s more so the lettering system that matters vs the numbering system in this case.

I can’t recall a bulletin saying to use the new designed seal so to be safe you’d be better off ordering 2 of (the 0M and under)

5 New number 8M0214939 old number 66302----SEAL Oil.

I wouldn't get too worried about this…assuming you have your drive numbers correct I would go with the correct double seal. The last shop probably used what they had or ordered the early style kit with the two seals by mistake. Been a long time since Ive been into and Alpha but if memory serves there isn't much a diff between the One and One Two.
