This airplane fascinates me. I’ve sat up by Nellis and drank my coffee a few times on my way home from work in the morning. Just enjoying my freedom. Some times I would see them on the outer edge of Area 51 between Warm springs and Rachel. Flying stupid low in the valley sub 500ft booking it. It’s always a good show. If your ever around Vegas it’s worth the drive by the base. Nellis is always hopping you can park off the road or in the desert.

Those things are all kinds of bad ass. I like that they can take nearly as much damage as they can put out.

The plane slows down when the gun fired for to long. That was the first plane my son was assigned to maintain in the Air Force.

Oh I see I thought he was a crew chief. He is a 2A3X1 which is a Avionics Systems specialists isolates malfunctions, and repairs and inspects A-10, F-15, and U-2 integrated avionics systems at organizational levels. Inspects, services and performs general aircraft handling procedures.

I live close to one of the largest bombing ranges in the U.S., Barry Goldwater Bombing Range, and the A-10s fly through my area all the time. One of their ranges is just off the highway and you can sit and watch them do bomb and gun runs.

In 67' as an apprentice I worked on wiring the Philco-Ford GU-7 test range, in a remote canyon just south of San Clemente, north end of Camp Pendleton. The GU-7 was the 25MM version that lost out to the 30MM GE GU-8. If you didn't know better you'd have thought the entire building was a bank vault. I have no idea what they ever used it for after P-F lost the bid and moved on.
This remote valley was amazing in its beauty. We had to all park out by the I-5 Trestles area, they transported us in on the rugged dirt roads, deer standing everywhere around the site. I'm sure that Eden like peace was quickly shattered once they started testing

2 of my really good friends from highschool went into the Airforce, one of them flies Warthogs, the other flies the F-22 Raptor. Pretty much the two ends of the spectrum of technological badassery.

My warthog buddy went on tour when Trump got elected, and flew in Syria for 6 months. He said overnight the mission objective changed from whatever political correct terms they were using like "Liberate the Syrian People" or whatever to "kill as many ISIS as possible." Basically 6 days a week, 2 flights a day just laying waste to garbage with that cannon.

Yessir.

Wars should be fought to win, not play games.

Those planes are threatening and scary. The skies should be a safe place.

Tom Clancy in Red Storm rising created an interesting scenario in a chapter, using A10's carrying depleted uranium shells doing a surprise flyover against Russia warships...insinuating the damage they could do.
I remember he was called before a congressional committee to explain how/where he found this information about military tactics&capabilities of certain aircraft(A10's).
.. guess it hit close to home.

Yep, I didn't think it was any secret.

I guess it was the W&T that got Clancy in trouble, if that story is true.

I imagine the barrels don't last long with uranium going through them. :)

I'd think that the "Surprise" aspect of that scenario would be the real tricky part --- well that and keeping them from blowing your ass out of the sky with their own Kashtan CIWS firing 30MM rounds out of two 6" rotating barrels  Well plus the various missiles, but hey, I'd love to see the youtube video of it ;)

I don't believe the run them all the time, those are mainly used when facing heavily armored targets (tanks). I think they run some type of incendiary rounds when targeting light vehicles and personnel

Amazing firepower in this aircraft.

The A-10's large, unswept high-aspect ratio wing and large ailerons give it excellent low-speed, low-altitude maneuverability. The wing also allows short takeoffs and landings. That's handy, because this plane frequently needs to operate from primitive forward airfields near the front lines. The wing skin isn't load-bearing, so damaged skin sections can be replaced easily in the field, and with makeshift materials if necessary.

Those General Electric TF-34-GE-100 engines produce 9000 pounds of thrust each. Their position not only protects them from being damaged by foreign objects flying up from unprepared runways, but also directs their exhaust over the tailplane, helping to shield them from detection by infrared surface-to-air missiles. The fact that they're both close to the aircraft's centerline makes it easier to fly the thing when one fails

Another old school favorite and workhorse freedom machine

"Spooky" comes for you stand the fuck by! My buddy designed and built the cooling system for the 105MM cannon out the side. Even with the cooling system they run so hot in rapid fire that it'll melt the barrel.

Just plain bad ass. Stupid that the brass keep trying to obsolete this aircraft.
