My neighbor has a shit load of muscle cars and has this particular 68 El Camino SS. All original matching numbers with 396/4 speed and a relatively decent paint job. Has a couple of trims missing but most of it needs to be replaced due to pitting. Strait body with no major rust.
What’s a fair price to offer?

not sure what its worth.
But I had a 72, non matching, unrestored SS with all the parts (cowl induction, hubcaps, etc) and it took a while to get $4500

That's whats in the background of the first picture.
He has a 66 Chevelle SS convertible just sitting in one of his garages that he never finished. All painted and ready to put back together with an LS motor. Been sitting there covered for about 7 years now and he hasn't touched it. That's really the one I want!
He has a shit load of classics in storage else where.

El Co's are not worth a whole lot...

Go on eBay motors. Put in the year make and model. Scroll down, and click the box on the left side that says "sold listings".

People can ask whatever they want. What they get is a whole different story.

(I was gonna say 5k)

Depends on if it is a real SS396 and has the original drivetrain. Without the OG engine and trans/rear end it's a 5-10k car if it's not altered/hacked much.

With it and the protectoplate etc and it's original paint/interior etc you could be looking at a 20-40k vehicle it really depends on the drivetrain as they could have been 325/350/375 HP.

Alterations and "resto-mods" typically lower the value unless done to a very high level.

Obviously the high HP version, with any suspension package (F40) rear disc brakes or other highly desirable options change things significantly.

Do some research and get the details, then you can simply look around on the internet to get a feel for what it is really worth.

Then offer him half. :D

If it’s a numbers matching 396/4speed car it’s worth a hell of a lot more than 5k...lol

It will never be a chevelle value wise but it could easily be 25-40k+ to the right buyer if it checks out.

I think a clean non numbers matching 396/4 speed could go for 15k+

How's Shelby associated with the car? He does all my work and has a crapload of motorcycles, mostly Dualsport. He's been a gearhead all his life and always wrangling something.

LOL, he’s my next door neighbor, it’s his sons car. The one behind it in the first pic is his and yes he is a gear head.

Shelby did a few of my systems, i new his parents. As far as the Elco, i guess people here haven't seen prices of them lately. An SS Shell of car not running are going for $5,000.00+ matching #'s or not. I had a '72 SS all matching #'s, was gonna rebuild the motor, pulled it out and left it for 5 years. Sold it to a friend as is for $2,500.00 that was 30 years ago. He had it running within 6 months, he still has it but doesn't drive it much, just like his Schiada R/T which is parked next to it, doesn't use that much either.

That's a '68 and if it's a factory SS396 the first 3 digits of the vin will be 138. I'd say it's worth close to 20K.

From Hagerty for a true '68

Current Values
  • #1 Concours$27,000
  • #2 Excellent$20,600
  • #3 Good$15,600
  • #4 Fair$7,200
#4 vehicles are daily drivers, with flaws visible to the naked eye. The chrome might have pitting or scratches, the windshield might be chipped. Paintwork is imperfect, and perhaps the body has a minor dent. Split seams or a cracked dash, where applicable, might be present. No major parts are missing, but the wheels could differ from the originals, or other non- stock additions might be present. A #4 vehicle can also be a deteriorated restoration. "Fair" is the one word that describes a #4 vehicle.
If it is a '69 4 ranges from low to higher HP. add another few K.

Just what I read from Hagerty and hey are usually close to actual value. Then again it may be worth much more...
I have always wanted a 68-72 Elky with a big block....wish I had the time and room to do a restomod. Cool rides.

If its a real 1968 SS El Camino the first 6 of the vin will be 138808.
If its an original SS 4spd (car/truck lol) its rare!

Give me your neighbors number and I'll call and work it out for you and let you know how it goes......:D

Really, do inspection and research to confirm what it REALLY is and what it is REALLY worth. Then offer him 40% less and see if he takes it.

Three rules my Dad always taught me about negotiating to help you win and not be a dick doing it.
1. Care less than he does (or at least appear to) but be respectful.
2. The worst he can say is no.
3. You can always go up so start low (respectfully, which is key).

Good luck.

It’s my neighbors, Shelby Ginbson’s sons car. Shelby has had it parked at his house for a couple of months now. Been for a couple of rides in it and it runs strong. He knows his shit and wouldn’t BS me about the car. Offered it to me about a year ago but we never discusssed $$$. The only modes that I know of are headers and aftermarket A/C. Vin confirms true SS. Still not sure if interested enough to buy it though. Would much rather have the 66 Chevelle convertible he has in storage...

Just looking at those few pics, I would pass unless it's a great deal.

It's hard to tell from a few pics, though. Get it on a rack and have thorough look at it. Repainted cars always worry me, the way the front bumper and trim fits could mean it needs a little weekend work or that the paint is hiding bad things.

Post up a pic of the cowl tag, next to the wiper motor, it will tell us what options it had.

My father-in-law bought a new 69 automatic, 350/300 in 68. I don't remember it being a SS, but after he passed away, mid 90s, the Mother-in-law offered it, and stuck to, a 5K asking price.... I saw her turn down $4500. cash, and about 2 weeks later, sell it for 5K.. Condition wise I'd guess a low 3 or high 4. Totally original, and she had all the service records, most of which were from a dealer...

Yep. This.

I'm working on a 66 Chevelle right now my customer paid over 40k for. Convertible SS. Looks awesome.

We put it up in the air and the inside of the Rocker panels are Gone. The body is ready to collapse on the frame.

You can't be too careful when buying a fifty year old car. Never let your emotions guide your decision.
