That’s probably where the conundrum comes in.. those 860s can rev to 6800. It will need a tall pitch to leverage the horsepower on the top end. I could see that simply not working that well in some applications.
The opposite. 860hp at 5200 rpm is taller pitch. 860hp at 6800 rpm is lower pitch. Given thw same gear ratio. Some boats don’t like the increased prop speed.

I know right? They were called 90MPH Editions from cigarette because they were guaranteed to run that out the door. Only 5 built. But all the 90MPH is kinda over the top. And the fact it does a “tad” more 😉😉

Have a 1 printed in front and blow peoples minds. 😂 Looks like a nice piece.

its a shame there is no good videos on this boat. A few threads on OSO but they lead no where. Would love to know where this boat is.
He's probably still got it. I remember when Ed (Pops) ran his talon 24 with a Racecrafter's engine prior to the Sorcerer and I believe it went 140 or so. Later small boats like the Talon were no longer allowed at the Shootout.

Last time I talked to Rod he was having fun with the drag and drive stuff like Bailey 👍

Damn! That is the most comprehensive answer I’ve seen on the topic. Besides dans original answer 😁😉

Thanks for the info. Good stuff.

I actually love all performance boats. The outboard cats huge out board CC’s and big HP I/O cats and vees. Even a 55mph jet bote. They’re all awsome.

However, personally I’ll take an i/o all day. To me, they’re just more fun and bad ass. My next boat will have 1,000 ish HP blower motors. Old tech, loud and nasty. Love that shit. I’d actually like to run dry pipes and name it “Quiet Down”
You see the boat " Hava Blast or "hava fun" I think its a 38 or 42 fountain big teague blower motors? Sounds and looks just like you are wanting. Normally he's idling through the channel on holiday weekends tossing out beads

LOVE that boat. That thing is mint. Someone told me he was the owner of Martini Bay or Kokomos or London Bridge resort (or maybe all 3...I cannot recall). I feel like I havent seen the boat in a year or two. I do know it was for sale

Last I heard they still
Own it.

I remember seeing it at the dock in havasu in the very early 2000’s and it was set on big blower surge. The huge PSI blowers made a whistle sound when they surged up. Craziest Fuckin sound I ever heard coming from a big motor. It would be like, ZING, pause, ZING, pause, ZING, pauses….so bad ass.

Agree too, there’s not enough video of that thing out.

Or you can have a 455 Olds, which is like the big chick at last call....

You have fun, but you won't tell your friends. The sheer noise and racket has you thinking things are happening quicker than they are. You catch a whiff here and there of something burning. You gotta keep an eye on lubrication. You don't wanna hurt her - but you know this isn't forever.
After 3 or 4 romps...... its over - but it's not a surprise.
Priceless! LOL!!👍

I was mistaken. The one you posted above was the one i was referring to. Good catch. It was built and then sold within a year if i remember correctly. Was amusing watching a 40' eliminator do a u turn in parker. Great show!
I was never in Parker in the 40 when i owned it... we did go through the Tres Martin class together though.
the 33x was in parker often.

Honest question, what’s 800hp cost from one of the big builders? Anyone know?

Edit: Assuming that’s including a 6 drive? Lots of cost savings if going SCX/similar?
the price difference between the 860 and a Teague 850 with a 6 drive and all the rigging was about 10k at the time I built the 40.

This is the one. He had it for sale not short after, not sure if it ever sold or not.

It did sell... Not sure where it ended up... I heard it went to Lake Norman but Also heard it was seen down at the Springs. either way , the motors were cool... They sounded amazing at 6800... and they pulled better than any one here has described. I was not sorry I chose them.

Tank-The topic is a great one, and I agree, the response was awesome.

I’ve spent time with both packages, and they each have performance appeal. The fact that both packages are DTS makes each a pleasure to drive; great throttle response and smooth, effortless shifting. If you’ve never driven a DTS package, you owe it to yourself to try it out.

great response, 👍 I do have to disagree on 2 points though. I wouldnt exactly call the 520 a lean engine as far as fuel mapping. sure they are lean as compared to a bulldog or perhaps even the 500R but they still run a pretty rich map all considering, not that I have a problem with this at all. a rich engine is a safe engine.

The other point is the DTS. I've never been a fan, never will be, don't like the feel, don't like the lag in throttle response in both directions, and don't trust the technology as far as safety is concerned. I'll bet a lot of you have never had an engine run away from you because the electric throttlebody stuck or the ecm didn't see the pullback on the throttle. I've experienced it multiple times and the technology sucks. I am good at working on them but it doesn't mean I have to like them. I will never be an advocate for the electric throttle body or the electric shift that I have seen repeatedly injure outdrives with less than 200 hrs on them. It's bad tech

to the original question. I'll take the IO. I never really cared for outboards and feel like they would be less of a thing if emmisions regulations weren't strangling and driving up the cost of imboards. dollar for dollar, I don't think they would be able to compete against inboards the way that they do otherwise.

I hadn't seen the build thread of your Eliminator until the link made here. It's a beautiful boat, and seeing the construction process unfold was educational and cool beyond words.

I’ve been in a boat at those speeds. The driver and front passenger can communicate at a reasonable level. The wind noise was louder than the outboard engines.

Don’t believe me? I don’t care. I was amazed.

A pontoon is 70 MPH wind in your face. You aren’t hearing shit.
Baller boats have headsets and coms.......
