50 Years Ago Today.

I caught a flight from LAX to Oakland, and hopped a Government bus to this little island in the middle of an estuary off San Francisco Bay in Alameda for a 9 week paid vacation. Walking across that little bridge, I thought it would be a quick 4 years and out, but turned into 28 years and set into play, the circumstances that would lead to my life's work. Today, I can't say that there's anything that I would have done differently.

Me (red arrow) 9 weeks later at Graduation. I was selected as Battalion Commander to rule over the Graduation Ceremony.

52 years ago today I Entered MCRD Marine Bootcamp San Diego Ca.
Turned my life around and gave me a trade I made my life's living on.

Ok, funny thing you bring up this island. I delivered a boat here a few weeks back. I was in a little bit of a panic heading over the bridge as to how the hell I was gonna pull it off. I did curb several times, and at one point had 8 trailer tires on the grass. But they knew I was coming, and I told them what I was driving, and they knew the deal. I can tell you this about that: other than that little island, that whole place is a zombie waste land now. I was a little worried I was gonna have drama getting in and out of that area, and have to run over some zombies!

Coast guard island. Been there quite a few times. Driven by it on 880 probably 1000 times.

It was named "Government Island" when I went through. After they closed the boot camp and moved all the District Offices over from San Fran, it was renamed "Coast Guard Island".

Fun fact: My Dad also went through Boot Camp there, but in 1951.

Never paid any attention to it. I grew up in the South Bay and any time I was in or going through HB on Hwy 1, I was more interested in what was happening west of PCH than east of it.
