Last week Lee brought a new 24' Schiada hull for a wood deck. Yesterday I picked up the lumber. I started cutting parts and pieces today. Lee will bring the plywood next week. No pics yet. Just a big hole, blue on the outside.

So they build a glass hull and then a wood deck is built right on top of it.

Is it attached with just resin and fiberglass? Or is there some other attachment method?

We need pics!

We also need more pics of the 21 done a few months back! :)

I called Lee, and he said he doesn't have any. I will try to track down Harlan and see if he has any pics or what the status of the boat is.

If I was Lee, I'd pull a top mold off that boat before it left the shop. :D I love the 24 with a 21 Deck on it!

Absolutely, In my ideal scenario i'd maybe go even just a bit taller on the deck, not only would it scale nicely to length of the boat, but that headroom is very useful in the already low deck 24's.... Also I'd take a little bit of arc out of the side gunnels.... Don't get me wrong, the thing is beautiful, I'm just nit picking the tweaks that would make it 110% ideal imo. :thumbsup

In fact looking at it again i would leave the arc the same, but just raise the upper deck like 1.5"-2" to give it more of the slope line the 21's and 22's have :thumbsup

AWESOME! Lee should definately mold this deck and offer it as an option to people building 24's. Any ideas of power and drive for this 24'?

Looks terrific!

So what do they do, completely rig the boat, unrig and then do the final wood finishing, then re-rig?

He said he might consider doing a mold for a 24 like that if there's enough interest.

We've talked to him about that for a while, it's just gonna take someone that wants to fork out the $$$

The next bare schiada new hull we do will be a 21 deck 24' for sure, The way that SR22 rides and runs i wouldn't recommend any of our customers doing something other that that bottom.

Wow that thing is going to be beautiful, I was wondering do they attach the deck to the hull the same way as an all fiberglass one, tabing the inside and wraping the outside like a full cap job or is it more involved. I sure hope Harlin is passing along this/his skill/trade to someone, it would be a shame to be a lost art some day. Hopefully he has a couple of young "students" that he is teaching. I would love to find my Dads old dark walnut wood decked Hallett flat and have him redo it.

This 24' is getting a Brummett EFI Twin Turbo with a V-Drive. The only package that could do that wood deck justice. :thumbsup

Oh and I thought the SR22 was a 24' not shortened. It's just called SR22, corect me if I'm wrong

When I spoke to Lee this came up and you are correct. The SR22 and the 24 are the same just different names.

Yep...I would not order one in wood, but I definitely like the lines on that versus the normal 24.

I don't believe Harlin is passing that trade on to anyone.. I know whiteworks offered to go down and intern for free (already skilled in the ways of wood) just to pick somethings up. Harlin told him that he works irregular hours out of his house, so it wouldn't make sense.

The SR22 is a shortened 24.
I believe they did it originally to fit into some ski race hull length limitations.

The SR22 & 24 are actually a "little" different. It's true it's the same length as a 24 Schiada (not shortened), but they did some work on the entry to make it less likely to bow steer. Or at least that's what I was always told.

But to answer the main jist of the question.. No it's not shorter.

SR22 came out of the 24' mold and then had extensive bottom work performed like Dave said, fixing the problems with the reputation for spin outs (the boat was built for arrowhead ski racing originally, where the 24's had been outlawed from racing for a couple of spin outs).... anyway long story short, the ski club never let the boat run a real race anyway, i think it had more to do with the fact that the boat is just so fast and knocks the water down so much better than anything else up there at the time that it was going to be an unfair advantage..... they used the 'spin out' theory as their ammunition for the boat not being allow to run.... We've turned the shit out of the thing running pretty damn fast, i'd say that thing has no tendency to even come close to spinning out the way it's set up.

SR22 = Actual length (keel to nose) 22 feet 4 inches.
24'= Actual length 22 feet 4 inches :D

The 24s that spun out were both outdrive boats. I have personally seen 21 Hallett Vector v-drives, 210 Hallett outdrives , outboard v-bottoms, outboard tunnels and flatbottom v-drives all hook and spin in a turn. Never a 24 Schiada v-drive.

I bond plywood to the fiberglas hull to attach the framing for the plywood deck. The decks are determined by plywood and lumber availability. For the 24' Schiada, the supplied plywood was 4' x 7' Mirante. This determined the foreward deck length. The lumber availability determines the cockpit dementions. Plywood and lumber availability is not like it was in years past, no Phil. Mahogany, or long clear alder lumber, or Monkey Pod plywood. The customer wanted the 21' deck style instead of the 24' runabout style. I have had plywood made for special applications.
I still have a new color reject 21' deck. It may go to the boat at B & K.
My grandson lived with us and did not want to spend the time involved to learn boat building. I spend 4-6 hours a day, sometimes, and 4-8 days a week. The length of time to complete a project depends on how many vacations we take.
Before the 24' Schiada deck I built a clone of BANZAI, Barry McCown's blown fuel Rich Hallett drag hydroplane. 161 MPH in 1963!!!!!!
Retirement is for the birds, the phone keeps ringing. It is a good thing that my wife was a telephone opperator, when I met her.
