Just picked up my new daily right before XMas. This 3.0 DMax is impressive so far. More power than my 5.3 Trail Boss and the mileage so far is better than expected. 22-24 around town and about 28 highway. We went to Las Vegas and Valley of Fire last weekend and used 1 tank of gas plus 60 miles on another tank. Loving this truck so far!

Any experience towing the boat with it? Interested how that motor tows a boat larger than 23’, as in 25-28’

I loved my Ram 1550 diesel, maybe 1 gallon of def every 2500 miles, Walmart 9.99 for 2,5 gallons. Just great torque, max I towed was 6500, no issues never overheated in summer.

I have a 2023. Doesn’t use much DEF at all. Got 32 MPG going to Vegas a while back. Tows our 23’ travel trailer with ease.

I have a 23 GMC AT4 w/ the 3.0. Definitely happy with the power and fuel economy. Took it to Vegas last weekend for kids soccer tournament. One tank of fuel there and back with driving around all weekend to games and dinner etc. got close to 600 miles on one tank.

I am ordering a Tahoe today but want the Z-71 package and you cannot order the 3.0 with that package. Going for the 6.2 and will watch the gas gauge fall!

My wife has a 2021 Tahoe Z71 and loves it. Can you get the RST with the 3.0? I would go that route if I was buying a Tahoe today. They look really similar.

I tooted the horn on my RAM 2500 diesel years ago. These 1/2 ton diesels are excellent vehicles. If you have never had a diesel, then driving needs to be adjusted, no jack rabbit starts like gas engines, yet plenty of power. Trade off is killer torque, keep the tac at 2K or so while taking a load uphill. Now with the new Ford F-250 I have, the addition on a 10 speed transmission has made using the torque curve with a load even easier to drive. Add to that, 1/2 ton trucks can be wheels around town with ease, 3/4 not so.

Be VERY careful on adding huge tires, depending on the rear ratio you may be committing a major mistake. Do the calculations for 2K-2.5K RPM at 65 MPH, see what it shows.

I have a 2022 Silverado with the 3.0 duramax 4x4 and I tow a 24' boat with no issue at all. If I stay conservative, I get 18 to 20 mpg. If your really on the gas, it's like 14 to 17 mpg. Around town and not towing 21 to 25. I have seen as good as 32 mpg , but that was really concentrating on the pedal to keep it right in the sweet spot.

To get max mpg in the freeway not towing, keep rpm below 1,600. With that you should get 30+ and as much as 36 mpg. If you think about it, we’re talking a 6000 pound vehicle [brick] getting over 30 miles a gallon it’s absolutely insane compared to what we used to get 20 years ago.

Just finished the mid travel upgrade with King 2.5’s with resi’s and adjusters. Dirt King boxed heim joint upper control arms also. Wheels are the new KMC IMS wrapped in Toyo Open Country R/T’s. I’m very pleased with the final product. Road testing for mileage and dirt testing for comfort coming up soon!

Looks great. What did you do out back?

Crazy how much faith GM puts in that lower front suspension mount.

Thank you! King 2.5’s w/ adjusters in the rear. I was worried it was going to sit too low but it’s pretty damn close to level. I want to do a Deaver mini pak to take away some harshness but I don’t want it to sit too high in the rear.

With the lower arm mount, is there an issue with weakness that is known?

I have never heard of anything with the mount. I doubt you will beat on it hard enough to hurt it. Truck is way to nice to be getting that crazy.
Just a genaral statement.

whats the milage change with the suspension and tires? I want to do something similar, but don't want to sacrifice the milage.
So far, just around town, mileage is within 1-2 mpg. I haven’t had a good trip on the highway yet but I will report back when I do. Still has plenty of power and I can still drive around with rpm below 2500 just like before.

Below 2500, you mean towing up a grade ? What's your driving around speed, 100 mph ? 😂

Lol! I mean while accelerating through all the gears. Trying to show the engine is not struggling with the bigger tires. Feels really good!

Did you have to do any trimming to clear the 35’s? Does it rub at all?

After my drive to the office today, I payed closer attention to the tach and during normal acceleration, the rpms stay below 2000. While on the freeway, my cruising at 75 rpm is now around 1500 and stock it was around 1700.

Just get the full Deaver pack, NOT spring under. Their replacement leaf springs make a HUGE difference in ride quality. Be prepared for more squat with weight though.

My old '01 that @69hondo has now has Deaver leafs for a OBS 1500 (88 to 98). that along with them being Deavers, that rear would sag a good 3 inches at least with 2 bikes in the bed. Now it is a 6" lift pack so there is room for the squat, it was just alarming the first time I put a load in it. But damn, it rode so much better than the stock leafs!

I did some modifications to fit the 35's. Just stuff behind the fender liners though. No fender cutting or anything like that. At the rear of the fender liner, you have to remove a steel bracket that the liner bolts to and in front you have to modify and move a plastic holder that the liner bolts to.

Thats good info. I don't want to look like a chump when I tow my boat either! Not sure if I want to do anything out back right now because it does sit pretty level and i dont want to add any height in the rear. Ill see how it tows my boat within the next couple weeks. Even then I only tow about 4 miles total each day while boating to the gas station.

I know no one buys a truck for milage but I would be curious what the larger tires did to it?
200rpm drop is pretty significant, what was the stock tire size, 31"?

The stock tires are about 31.8" I believe. Yes about not buying the truck for mileage, but having the extra power and better mileage than the gas engines is pretty awesome, so it did help me make my decision on buying the diesel. With the 35's on it, I am still getting way better mileage than my 5.3L Trail Boss did stock!

Extra power, or extra torque? Did you get it "tuned"?
How often do you need to add DEF?

The extra torque is what I was referring to. No tune. It only has 2k miles on it so no DEF yet. The tank still shows about 2/3 full. I saw a company that makes a plug in programmer that adds 40 horse and 60 torque with 3 different modes I think but I'm not interested in anything like that. Its already more than enough for a daily driver. Besides if I want to drive something quicker, I have a 64 Malibu with a 327 that revs to 7k for that!

Haven’t known a half ton and a three-quarter ton diesel. I could tell you the half ton probably due to the liter size uses about half as much DEF as a three-quarter ton. But now about nine dollars for a huge bottle at Walmart.
