It’s nice to be able to hitch up a trailer in the garage with my truck idling and not have the place smell like a tractor pull.

But you're defeating the entire purpose of having a diesel pickup.
Next thing you'll say is you haven't installed a lift kit because you actually don't mind the factory ride and handling.

Putting helmet on now 😆

I threw 35s and Thuren suspension on both trucks as soon as they were paid for. Not for the lift but for the ride. I’m not riding in a lumber wagon if I can avoid it, lol.

I connect trailers all the time with my truck running. The only time I see a bit of black smoke, is when I floor it…
Hell my 2002 GMC 2500 4x4 always had a soot stain above the exhaust and it was a charcoal truck and it was stock.
The white truck pictured above… find the soot stain… see… deleted, it still runs clean… but I didnt build it for racing. I built it for towing and reliability.
I think a lot has to do with who does the tune when it gets deleted. My 17' powerstroke is deleted and if I let it idle in the garage it stinks like stated above and I'm just in the "tow" tune setting on my 5 position dial, which is number 2. Different strokes for different folks. I understand the reason to keep it stock and also the reason to delete it. Luckily this is America and we have the ability to do as we wish. (Well for the most part 😉)

100% on the tuner making a huge difference. And I have no issue with rolling coal, it’s just not my style. But I have never seen a deleted truck that didn’t put out some soot when pinned. Probably because most owners keep them in the higher level tunes the majority of the time. Living in an area that requires emissions I prefer not to worry about it. The emission nazis are only going to get worse in the future. If I lived in BFE I would be more on board with a delete.

I wouldn’t mind a little more power (who doesn’t) and have considered installing a PPEI emissions compliant tune along with their Aisin tuning. A level 1 tow tune would be plenty for what I do, 80% of my trucks life is spent towing, and I don’t want to worry about EGTs when I’m pulling my toyhauler up I17 with the accelerator matted.

Soot is going to go somewhere....out your tailpipe or back into your motor. When fuel magically burns emissions don't automatically change the way fuel burns....soot is still created. The only thing emissions does is mask the smoke from the politicians and liberals.

I have used my 16, and now my 17 Ram for plenty of short trips around town without any emissions related issues. I do however make it a point to get them out on the highway for a long enough period to get them up to temp and regen every few hundred miles.

I just completed the 67A recall on my 17, and received a 4 year extension on the emission system warranty. I have no intention of deleting my truck and don’t mind filling with DEF. It’s nice to be able to hitch up a trailer in the garage with my truck idling and not have the place smell like a tractor pull.

I understand the need for some to delete, but it’s not necessary on every truck. It’s unfortunate that the 5th gens have been so problematic but my experience with the later 4th gen trucks has been trouble free.
Have you noticed anything different with the recall besides wasting your time to have the DEF gage read empty sooner?

I take short trips all the time because I don't really drive anything else. No emissions issues.

I am about to do the 67A because the offer to extend the warranty was tied to an expiration date. My 2018 has about 90k on it bought in 2019 as a leftover.
Not a single issue aside from the TSB Transmission internal issue.

I am in NM in the middle of a 4500 mile trip pulling my toyhauler. I did the same trip 2 years ago with the same trailer and route, when I get home I’m going to sit down and compare my hand calculated MPG and DEF usage. I’m guessing that I’m getting 7.5-8 towing at 77-83, my fiver weighs about 9500 without my RZR in it. I haven’t noticed a significant decrease in MPG or significant increase in DEF usage. I might have one tank not towing prior to the trip, I’ll have to look at my receipts and see. 80% of the time my truck is towing my boat or toyhauler, so it’s hard for me to get a tank without towing to compare.

The 16-18 Rams are pretty solid trucks and have the least amount of emission related issues, in my experience.

The fine print on my 67A recall did have a time limit- but it was 2027 or something like that to get it completed, IIRC. I’ll have to look, I have the paperwork in my console.

Thanks for the info. I'll look at the letter again and see if I miss understood as my wife was reading it to me as I drove, excited to see a freebee I suppose. I prefer to deal with this closer to tag renewal and I just renewed in June. There was no registration hold or any games played. Mine is a 2500 and it does not use much DEF IMO. Maybe a gallon per 1000 miles and I'm hauling my Dump Trailer 3x a week. The only reason I own Diesel trucks is construction.

I have 47,000km on my 2021 Ram when I had a massive failure pulling my trailer with my family. I limped into the dealership nearby....after unhooking my trailer. They should have there transmission department on speed dial. I soon figured out this is going on a lot more then I thought. I paid big bucks for this truck and expect better from the organization. Just thought I should share after I read your story. I got a vehicle as a loaner but not what I drive I need my truck so this was a another disappointment. I have been told I will get the same transmission that is prone to failure installed. The service department people I dealt with were really nice but they obviously have there hands tied because the shots are called with head office and the warranty people. There goes my summer and camping plans.

Ran the numbers post 67A. MPG doesn’t seem to have changed, 7.5-8ish towing my toyhauler at 77-83, just under 10 at 57-63. Low teens towing my 24’ Lavey 65-75. High teens unloaded at speeds under 70. And low to mid teens unloaded in mixed metro driving with stop and go and 75+ mph freeway. This tracks with my mileage pre update, and with my 16 2500 SO truck.

Def usage appears to have gone up a bit, maybe 10%. 800-900 miles per tank towing my TH.

No noticeable change in power or drivability.
