19 Daytona outboard to jet conversion

Earlier this year I picked up my '89 Daytona, happened across it on a comment from the owner on FB on the SoCalJetBoat page. He was looking to trade for a larger boat, I saw his comment and immediately messaged the owner. This stuff never comes up for sale in Vegas, and he was in Vegas! Set up a time the next day, as soon as I saw it, I had to have it. One of the cleanest Daytonas I have seen in a long time! Pretty much original down to the interior. Only work he had done was replace the rubrail and new wood in the transom.

All of the photos the owner gave me of the original owner, pretty cool to see some history on it. I have since talked to the original owner through messenger, very nice guy but not very talkative.

Ran the boat for the summer, both the wife and I agreed it's just not our style. We both like Jets with a big V8 and instant power. Some pics we took of the few trips we had with it over the summer.

I decided the original interior had to be replaced, it was in decent shape but starting to crack on the seat bottoms. Went with a carbon fiber style but kept the old school style. I have this in the classified section for sale, I am going to change to the seats to fiberglass.

Summer's over, and my plans to convert it a jet started to take shape. Pulled the motor and sold it, new owner putting it on a fundeck. Then proceeded to gut the boat completely.

This weekend I took the boat over to my buddy's house and pulled it off the trailer and set on a dolly. He does incredible work, and very meticulous with rigging and fiberglass. Initial plan is for a low pro intake with a full set back. Outboards came as flat keel, so we are going to convert this to a rounded keel. Also adding Balsa floors, to get rid of the carpet.

Welcome to the 19ft daytona jet club. Mine is a 1998. Bought it almost 2 years ago. The 2nd owner ran a 250 shot of Nitrous on a pumped up chevy 468. Oil change last year showed metal in the oil. Decided to tear it all down including the pump. Doing alot of upgrades. R&D marine is finishing the the motor now. We decided to take off the Nitrous. Just going to do normally aspirated. Alot of upgrades. Duel 750 carbs, port and polished heads, new cam, new crank, that's only the few I can think of off hand. We completely rebuilt the pump also. Really excited to hear it start up. Forecasted to be at 755hp on pump gas. Harald from R&D Marine is saying right around 113MPH when it is all tuned. Video attached is me in parker last year cruising at 85MPH. The kids love it!!! We do not go that fast with them in it.

Very nice! I plan on going a little different route with mine, TT 6.0 LS, tuned to around 11 psi. I went back and forth with BB vs LS but I decided to do something different after talking to a buddy running this setup

Just curious, does the entire transom get re-done during this process or will it just get filled in and then cut for the pump?

We are going to cut the opening for the pump, set the intake and then I will be taking it to fiber composites. They will be capping it, regel the transom and rear deck and fix the various holes that I don’t need anymore.

Slow progress, but I did get the pump back with the lollipop red powder coat!. Went with a standard intake and had Jack McClure at MPD machine it for a ride plate and shoe. Waiting on my place diverter and droop then will have that coated to match as well.

Made some progress, the flu is going around here bad lately and has knocked alot of people on their ass being sick.

Still have a little ways to go to set the intake, and clean up the cutout. still waiting on the sea goin epoxy to get here. But definitely a little progress happening.

Went back and forth with the motor setup, but for now I decided to keep a traditional big block. I really like the TT LS setup so I will probably start working on that type of power for the Daytona after I get it up and running. I felt that it would stretch out the build to long and we would not be able to use the boat this summer after all of the work that i want to do to it. Hooked up with Barry Obler during the holidays and he is getting started building me a 496 BBC, his reputation is awesome and I feel more than comfortable he will get a nice motor put together.

Before you get much farther I HIGHLY recommend getting ahold of Jeff Bennett and having a radius keel bottom put on it, that is a flat delta bottom, it won’t work for shit with a jet, fine for an outboard but absolutely terrible with a jet…you will be EXTREMELY disappointed with this boat if you don’t do this

Figured I would update this, before the boat got flipped back over I decided to clean the bottom up. After 35 years of gunk from the river was time, 2500 grit wet sand and that junk came right off.

We rolled her out in the driveway, with the help of some friends got her back on the trailer finally. I can't say I like doing this at all, little nerve wracking. But finally after almost 2 years on a dolly she's ready for the next step.

Kind of a cool thing to come across instagram, I follow this page cause who doesn't like the 90's truck scene?? Anyway, low and behold, hey that's my boat!

Trying to finish the motor up, picked up a set of QFT Brawler 750's and sent them to John at C&J to dial them in. Really like the way they look, got all the fuel plumbing and linkage dialed in.

Next step, got her down to Shoemaker for a Full cap, filling all holes and regel the transom, clean up inside the gunnels from all the interior rub marks. Also adding a water dam right behind the center balsa as that seemed to have skipped our mind. Hope to have her back before turkey day

Filled the OB control cable holes that were right in the middle of the red fade, looks spot on
