Thermocouple is an easy fix. Pick one up at Home Depot. It measures heat from the flame. If it doesn't detect that the pilot is lit, it shuts gas off so you don't blow up the house. Take you 10 minutes to take it off and 10 minutes to replace it. No big deal.
