Looking at a 25 Eagle with a 496 mag ho with 340 hours on it. The last time the owner took it out, it stalled and wouldn’t start. His shop replaced the cam sensor and idle switch replaced.

Are these common failures on this engine package?

All I know… thats a damn good engine…
I would have no problem owning another one.

Mine had zero issues… I mean ZERO..
I have the worst luck known to man but I blew up 2 in 2 seasons less than 350 hours on the first one and less than 30 on the second

496 ho are awesome motors. If the boat is well taken care of im sure the motor is as well. Dont have a answer for your question but look to see if the fuel pump has been updated and not orginal.

Agreed, 496 is an incredible motor if the maintenance schedule has been followed. Solid power and should last forever. Take it to a reputable shop and have them look at everything.

Was the second a rebuild? At least back in the day, most shops wouldn't rebuild them.

There’s a lot of sensors and crap on that motor. I had them in my last cigarette. Replaced one block when a couple cylinders were low compression. Buddy had one in his lavey that had to get a new block because of reversion. Prob had 100 hours on it.

I had a sensor go bad and it’d go into limp mode and I know others have had sensor issues too.

With that said, once I had them dialed in man, turn the key, pin the throttles to the dash from one end of the lake to the other. All day, every day.

Like others said, maintained they’re awesome. Leak it down, test the oil, then make your decision.

The 496/gen 7/8.1L are great engines, they just have a lot of sensors. The 2004 is what I have. The 2004 is a good model year for that engine as you have the latest cam sensor, aluminum exh manifolds, and many had the gen 2 cool fuel which didn't have the paint chip issue the gen 3 had. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the boat. Like Tank said, I'd go through it and replace some of the sensors, Idle Air Control Valve and a few other things and it should give you years of trouble free service.

If you end up buying it I could give you a list of things to proactively replace if you want.

Thank you. I’m going to look at the boat Saturday, it sound like it may have CMI headers on it, owner says it has headers and they are individual chrome tubes. Boat is at storage and he didn’t have photos.
He said the cam sensor was changed due to stalling and wouldn’t start. I’m calling his shop to get the lowdown on this. The boats a 2004, but maybe it has a left over 2003 engine in it??

I had one in our 02 Baja, sold it with 530 hrs and only thing that ever went bad with it was the IAC.

Update, the shop says it got a crank sensor and a IAC.
It is quite common for the boat and engine date not to match, I'd be leery of more than a year or two. You can have it scanned to see how many hours are at what RPMs.

I will echo the same remarks, the 496 HO is a very reliable engine. We have the 2007 in our 255. We also had a couple of minor sensor issues. Somethinbg else to watch out for is "bravoitus". Ours had it around 400-500 hours.

Only problem I've ever had with 190 hrs was bad plugs that might have been from ethanol and or to little use. After switching to NGK @ about 100 hrs haven't had any problems.

I changed the water pump once on mine along with a water pressure sensor. That's it. Yearly service
450 hours and I run it fairly hard

Mine is an 05, plugs about every 100hrs ( mine started to sputter on acceleration) and water pressure sensor that will put it in limp mode.

Serviced annually regardless of hrs.

And is generally decent on fuel if your not WOT.

I had bone stock twins (with Bravos) in a 35 Fountain. Flogged the crap out of it for 3 years. Other than fouled plugs, never had a problem.

We had 800 hours on one when we repowered. 2004. No issues other than regular maintenance. I understand 2000 hours is not uncommon before rebuild.

They’re great until they aren’t. I’d make sure to have a shop diagnose and probably figure some deal with to have fixed prior to handing over the money.

Well this boat was a bust. Advertise photos are perfect interior , in reality all sun damaged and needs new interior . Second used boat I have looked at (this one was an 24 nuera) and the owners seem to think by posting old photos, ya just won’t notice the interior is trash.
The search continues.

One of my first questions is “how old are the pics?”

This eliminator is for sale in the classified section. I’m sure most people are weary of the Volvo drive, but I’ve only ever heard great things about those drives and not many negatives, other than “it’s not mercury”. It’s a pretty damn good price for how clean it is also.

Yes I’ve seen it. No Volvo for me,
