How did it work? I assume different insurance needed? Was it worth it? A family member asked me about renting ours so it got the wife and I talking. I would be open to it but am concerned about it getting destroyed. But if we are not using it might as well make some money off of it? 2015 Feetwood Southwind 32V. Pictures below.

Me and the wife were going to buy a cabin and AirBNB it, but after thinking about it we decided against. People don't take care of what isn't theirs, and then sometimes even when it is theirs. RV would be worse I think.

I totally understand what you all are saying. But wondering if anyone has done it and what was the experience like. Was it as bad as it seemed, did you make money etc.

I know myself and allot of friends as family rent air b&b and we always leave it the way we got it, I would assume the same for most on RDP. I know not everyone is like that. Also I would assume there is a deposit of sorts that could cover typical damages that could occur. Insurance would cover major damages. I also have a warranty that covers major parts and components for the RV.

I also just did my taxes and I could use more write offs! He said if I used it as a rental I could get more tax benefits etc.

A buddy put his up with a rental company years ago. full insurance. had all the bases covered, they made all the payments on time. he went to use it himself once and it was disgusting, ended up losing his ass even with the money he got from insurance,

The difference between airbnb and RV rentals is simple fact that everyone knows nothing about the rv working systems UNLESS they have had a rv before. Airbnb you know how everything works. Simple shit is all new to them. No hot water ? Is the propane on and the switch on ?? Etc etc

Go look at rentals, similar to what you’re proposing.

I would assume the most profitable ones are setup in a space, and never move locations.

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine a few years ago. Had a nice revolution and it got wrecked by renters. One person took out a bollard and whipped off like 3 bay doors. It got so trashed he turned it into insurance and basically ripped everything inside out and redid it. New flooring, couches, dinette, ext. it was an ordeal and it always came back disgusting after renters. No one ever cleaned anything

My Friend tried it. He still owns 5 of them but passed it off to another guy to run. In a year or 2 they will be worthless. He has 20 year loans on each 1.

They were constantly breaking stuff and stuff coming up missing. Like the power cords. Phone calls at all hours when stuff would not work. He had to take them to the dealer to be fixed. The guy renting them now knows how to fix everything. He is making money but I am sure he will just drop them off at some point and there will be 12-16 years left of payments.

I have my motorhome in an LLC as a rental company. I only have to advertise it twice a year legally. I don’t rent it unless it’s close friends though. Something about some sweaty nasty dude sleeping on my mattress grosses me out 🤮😆

Mine is too and leased to my business for traveling. Both companies get the write off.

Here is a rental from KOH one of the wet years. This was not my rental, but one of our crew had rented it and wheeled it right into what was once a dry lake bed but now a lake😂

I did rent one for a week up in Idaho a few years ago, house water pump took a shit day one and I had to install a new one on the road, we deducted the cost from our bill. I just don’t see how it would be a thing I’d want to be involved with from the owners side of things. From the renter side it’s a fucking bargain LOL

I am not. But thinking of doing an LLC. But my accountant says I do need to show some income to be able to take tax advantages.
Mine is in a Montana LLC and I lease it to my business in CA for the year.

Not sure how it would work out leasing it to yourself and being the member of the LLC.

We had a vacation home that we chose NOT to rent out, but got talked into allowing a couple to use it, as he was a good friend of a good friend. He was a doctor, his wife was a nurse, they lived in a beautiful old lakeside home that they had lovingly restored, and we had socialized with them a bit. Thus, we thought they’d respect us and our property.

We made it clear there were to be no pets in the home. Well, they brought their dog anyway, and left it in the master bedroom while they went downhill skiing. Of course, the dog didn’t care for being left behind, and scratched the crap out of our bedroom’s beautifully finished double doors. Naturally, the guy turned out to be a true asshole when he refused to get the doors repaired.

Don’t do it.

The only way that works is if you treat it as a business and have ZERO emotional attachment to your rig and its just a tool for business.

People are animals. And majority of renters are NOT like us.

Good evening, from Bob your renter.

On my attorney’s advice I am sending you this quick email to let you know your RV got stuck in some loose dirt today. It took some doing to get unstuck but after an hour of trying we got out. However, just as we were getting free the transmission started smoking heavily and now the RV wont go into gear. We are on the Navajo reservation 8 miles outside Monument valley, just down graded road 825 off highway 163. We didn't have cell service, but luckily a Navajo sheriff saw us and has taken us to get a rental car and we are heading home as I write. The Sheriff said you should get the RV towed out of there right away, before night fall if possible. The good news is I was able to get the RV unstuck for you.

Also, I regret to inform you that the electronic stairs didn't open all the way and my 80 year old mother-in-law fell going out the RV and it appears she broke her hip. The Kayenta medical clinic on the Rez cant help her and based in her pain level they have dispatched a medi-flight. We aren't sure if she is going to Vegas or Phoenix but we will keep you up to date.

Right now we are focused Nana, but please let us know how you will be compensating us for the medical bills, pain and suffering as well as the out of pocket expenses associated with getting home due to your RVs mechanical failure.

Regards,
Bob

Your first statement says “a family member” asked. That in itself is answered to your question. No f*cking way.

Buddy rented out his camper on Outdoorsy during covid and the following summer.
It came back a little hammered a few times but he was good with it. He was able to double the money he had spent buying it and got another one that he doesn't rent out.

If I remember correctly the rent money paid the trailer off in less than 2 years?
It wasn’t too thrashed when I saw it, and don’t remember him saying anything was broken, just a little worn.

The key is a dedicated unit that is a business. No attachment, no cares, just business. Your personal unit is just that, personal. Most will not appreciate someone else thrashing your personal unit. Some renters are good, many, if not most are not.

Hell I hate when my kids go with us in the RV, something always gets broken and nothing they use gets cleaned like it should.
So no I would never rent our RV out.

Pretty much how it went. He got paid Camping World prices on a couple repairs he did himself that Outdoorsy collected the $ from the renters on.
Then it got hail damaged and they totalled it and he got paid some more. He definitely came out smelling like roses on that deal.

Not a chance. Nobody is going to treat your stuff as well as you do. Some might try, but I work too hard for my stuff to let some random person use it. But I'm weird that way.
You are NOT ALONE.
