I’ve been on the hunt for an rv for a while. My wife and I enjoy remote boondock camping and desert off-road trips. With a baby on the way we decided to ditch the alternating rooftent and toy hauler program for a motorhome.

I wanted something nice but still able to get us reasonably out of the crowded areas but something that I could still pull into a full hook-up resort.

I decided the class c route would fit the bill for us with simplicity of the chassis and the upgrades available out there. I also wanted full body paint and something that was exceptionally cared for.

Turns out that is a tall order in todays world. I looked for about a year. Went back and forth on floorplans and finally decided the Fleetwood 31M floorplan was the one to have for us.

31M is longer than I initially wanted. But a private bedroom and large bathroom were must haves for us so the search was on.

In august I found this 2014 on marketplace. Full body paint. Under 10 years old. Low miles. Low generator hours. Leveling jacks. We struck a deal and we were motorhome owners.

Went home and we got to work.

It needed a couple things to get it up to par. Shampoo carpets, the shitty fake leather couch was flaking, and the dinette was stained. We pulled the furniture and opted to have those pieces refinished. New leather for the couch and updated fabric for the dinette. Both turned out great.

I then got to move on to the fun stuff. I originally wanted to do a 4x4 conversikn, but at the end of the day this would always be a long heavy vehicle and I am not convinced 4x4 would be a life changing option to add given the cost.

I came across weldtec designs. They advertised a 6” lift with new springs front and rear and I could fit 33” tires. Being able to air down significantly will give me the confidence to get me to our preferred camp spots and the extra ground clearance will keep me from scraping off anything under the rig.

Went to work on the suspension and at the same time had the installer reinforce the hitch. When I got it back the motorhome is a whole different animal. The steering stabilizer added a lot of confidence to the handling and the new suspension was night and day over stock.

This was went I picked it up.

The tires were a must do for me. I wanted to be able to haul ass on the hwy and not worry about blowouts, smash potholes, and also air down and get to the middle of nowhere without rattling this thing apart.

Ordered some wheels and 235/85 BFGs. This thing turned out badass when I was done.

Drove it on the freeway yesterday and the new tires made driving this another new experience. A lot quieter and the height difference is nice as well.

I’ll keep this updated as we used the rv and make changes or add upgrades.

Awesome. I have a friend up here in Montana who built a short Class C for a trip to Alaska; a lot of the work was done in San Diego. She did something similar and decided not to go 4WD because she felt they would get themselves in trouble with 4WD. Plus, they could not justify the added expense.

However, they did add an ARB-selectable rear locker that they used as insurance and a winch. The ARB was very useful on a few occasions. Some traction boards stashed somewhere might be handy. Looks great.

Good call! I got the traction boards in the bins. I am going to add a front receiver for bike racks and cargo carrier when I get a chance. Hoping to also stash a winch here somewhere that I can slide in the receiver if needed and it will also be a good recovery point..

Snapped a quick pic of the hitch work. Also had the frame extensions completely welded…. Believe it or not the my only Had a handful of tack welds holding them in.

Also might notice the lift blocks on the pass side of the axel. This thing leans passenger with the lift on it. The alignment shop put it on the scale and said it’s 800LBS heavier on the passenger side. Not sure if I’m going to leave it as is yet. I’d welcome suggestions there….. maybe pull a leaf on the driver side and ditch the lift blocks?

Weights are going to change...

Full tank of fuel?

Fresh water?

Black water?

Grey water?

Tools? Firewood? Ice? Stuff?

Individually adjustable air bags would be my vote.

what was the ballpark estimate to convert to 4x4?

It varied based on parts you had to buy. I was around $15k and I even have a front Dana60, t-case and manual trans that I was going to use for it. The full u-joint off-road conversion starts at $25k

This was much more reasonable for something I will maybe use 10 times a year 😂

This thing is bad ass. The tires make it. Agree with everyone else air bags will help with the lean.

Watch that departure angle off road. We came across a guy with a similar deal who had managed to high center himself with the rear wheels off the ground. We got him loose but it wasn't without damage.

Jezz that’s excessive. For that price you can buy a Jeep with a bad ass winch and tow it around incase you get stuck lol

That was actually part of my mental gymnastics on getting this to make sense for me… I didn’t want to worry about steep driveways or getting hung up out camping.

Have a frt hitch added and then you can use a multi mount winch - Warn 12,000 lb With Rope! Have another section of rope 3/8 x 100 foot w/ loops on both ends and keep some shackles on hand …

then you’ll always be able to get out!

Why is it heavy on passenger side?
Fuel water tanks?
inside furniture Set up ( more build out)

what happens when the gray and black are full? Does the weight transfer to the other side?

air bags will help @ every tire and control sway off road, Firestone or airlift air bags

That’s what we did only had to use it once so far but glad we had it. Also nice for extra bikes or bike rack for beach trips.

I am honestly not sure. Tanks are centered in the chassis. The bigger slide is on the driver side.

Maybe the hallway being on the drivers side and master bed/couch/kitchen/bathroom on the passenger is enough to shift the balance.

Do your levelers even reach the ground now?

Yeah but it’s sketchy. I have those red plastic jack base pads that are about 9” tall that make it about the same as factory.

So far this project has yielded more form than function 😂

Just know that at night running bikes or motorcycles on the front the headlights will be pretty much useless at night. Oh and don’t turn on the high beams! It wasn’t so bad with the black rims but the silver ones ouch!

Did you keep the stock wheels and tires? Looking for just the chrome wheel covers if they’re available?

Been enjoying this thing a lot lately. It is really comfortable to drive now. I usually cruise about 70mph unloaded and didn't think much of it until I got a scan gauge. On the scan gauge I added a bunch or parameters to watch including the trans temp.

First outing I saw trans temp chilling at 200 degrees while cruising and almost 230 degrees on some hills which I thought was concerning and maybe I made a mistake with the valance.

Looked around for some info on the web.... A ford service manual for the motorhome chassis says these transmissions should run up 250 degrees normally and CEL will come on at 275 degrees ☢️. I think I will have the trans serviced and make sure it gets synthetic fluid and monitor again before I add a larger cooler. 230 degrees seems pretty spicy to me, we will see.

Looks great OP. Nice job. What kind of MPG are you getting?

5.6 mpg 😂😂😂

Edit.. I think that was with a heavy foot, the loaded trailer and 2 rzrs. But still pretty terrible lol

I just a lifted class C motorhome today in Fallon, NV. I had never see a C Class lifted. I thought how cool it was, and what a great idea.

Towed great, certainly glad i have the peace of mind with the hitch work I did and the ground clearance.

We camped way back in wash 13 last weekend at glamis. The other motorhomes and even a couple of the trucks were getting stuck. I was able to pull right up and right out fully loaded with no issues.
