Big Cube Blower vs. Big Cube TT Set Up

Ive been throwing around the idea of building a spare engine for my Mach 26. (Yes a spare drive will be on order and built)

I do know how to contain myself and run my boats efficiently but at the same time I REALLY enjoy when I run my stuff hard. And I always have, whether it be the few racecars Ive owned or the boats. Us motorheads will always chase the adrenaline rush and pushing the limits of our stuff.

For background, current set up is a 565ci with a 3.3 whipple built by Savage. Made 1100hp/1200ft-lb on the dyno with some of the best internals. It was built to run with the bigger boats at higher speeds.

My first thought was to remove the MEFI, add a Holley ECU/harness and a 8L whipple on the current set up.

Separately I thought, Ill run this until it dies and have something else ready to go, I dont want to be down a season waiting for an engine, parts and drive rebuild.

I have never seen a Mach 26 with a big HP TT set up hidden under the hatch and thought that may be cool to do. A true sleeper much like I have built my cars.

Everyone including me loves a blower (sexual or not) but I'm considering switching it up. Maybe a big blower set up or a TT set up. There would be a few additional parts and changes but I like to build one of a kind things.

AND no I will not be putting a 1350/1550 with a M8 in it... There are many engine builders out there that build a nasty turnkey engine. Teague, Brummett, maybe Alexi would build one since he has history with the boat.. etc Thats not my question...

1) What would you build and put in this boat?
2) What TT Mach 26s are out there? I dont think there is one
3) Blower vs. Turbo?
4) Build the current engine with a 8L and modern ECU or divorce your wife and build another engine?

Was literally talking to a friend about this. How come I don’t see turbos in the 25’ boats. Probably because no one really makes a kit for it.

Turbos will help cruising speed, and less load on the drives imo.

There is an inmate here with a conquest 28 foot with a twin turbo setup. Cant remember who it but it is beautifully clean.

If you go to Teague it will be a blower and if you go to Carson he can build you a 2,200 pump gas turbo engine although drive longevity might be a problem. A friend ran Carson’s 2,200’s in his Skater and never got them to stop stalling while shifting. You can’t go wrong with any of the builders you mentioned.

If I had it to do all over again I would do a twin turbo over the big cube blower motor I built for my 25 Daytona. Hunt is on for the next big boat and this will be the direction I head unless I go with an outboard boat.

This is all fixed with drive by wire now. The problem is trying to dump 200mph props into gear. The instantaneous loads are unbelievable. The mechanical throttle motors had to run like 4 IAC valves and that was barely enough.

A couple months ago i spent a couple weeks down at Carsons getting him set up on the new Motec computers on two of his big Turbo motors. We were running them on the dyno with the transmissions connected, by the end we couldn't make the engine stall dropping it into gear. The instantaneous torque load is over 500 ft lbs when he has both dyno's locked together. And sustained load once it stabilized was around 300 ft lbs. Think about that, an LS1 motor makes about that much torque all in, and this was at idle.

Also the mid range torque on those Brummett turbo motors is unmatched, even by a blower or whipple setup. That turbo package after about 3000 RPM the torque just lays flat all the way to 8,000 RPM. It's mind blowing seeing the kind of power levels they make on his big ass dynos. The fuel burn rate is stupid 🤣🤣🤣

New tech does wonders haha

I’ll be fine with 1400hp and a 28p prop.

You would have been in heaven when i was down at Carson's getting all of the closed loop boost control dialed in. The motec boost control works amazingly well. So good that the wastegate essentially becomes your throttle at higher loads. The throttle lever is directly tied to the boost control system through the software, so more throttle means more demanded boost, the wastegate does the work, the throttle blades become somewhat irrelevant above a certain torque level and the system works so smooth the driver never knows it's going on. It's no longer a throttle handle, it's a torque handle.

It's basically same thing with the GTRs I work on. Would really love to see it applied to the boat V8 world.

My ideal set up would be Motec M150 and C1212 dash with a big Twin turbo set up. Low boost to get on plane, switch maps on a toggle switch to high boost, and flex fuel. Plus if theres a problem the motec can detect it and shut down the engine to save it. Ahhhhhhhh 😂

I prefer the low end torque of a Whipple over turbos in an I/O set up without a transmission. I’ve owned a couple Brummett TT vdrives, and those pull hard at the upper end, I have a close friend with a Whippled Vdrive and that low and mid range is great. The turbos work when you’re already running hard, the Whipples work better through out the entire rpm range imo. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I want to say Gary Kincaid helped someone with a twin turbo Daytona at one time. I could be wrong, but Gary does know his stuff on the turbos.

What about a bigger ProCharger? The way the power comes in is so much fun. It’s a middle between rotor and turbo and in my boat the pull is so much more fun than say a roots or rotor imho.

In my experience with cars, procharger has never been great for me. PD Blower or TT has been top dogs depending on set up. D1, F1A and F1X Ive experienced and it pulls hard on top end but ive never ridden in a boat thats procharged. Maybe due to traction, this is all in street drag stuff. Not promod or boat. I know you enjoy yours but Im not a fan of the looks, it would take some serious wheel time for me to buy into procharger. If we meet up this summer I'd like to see it

I make peak torque around 4K right now, so it would have to be super easy on the sticks with this kind of TT setup. I know these are mostly vdrive packages but I think it would be cool to have the fastest standalone TT 26' out there. A question for you or others, would my SCX be able to ring out with this kind of TT power? I would guess heat is a factor... but Im no expert. I dont know if someone has tested 2K+ hp with a SCX for (somewhat) longevity. Maybe the offshore or LOTO racers but rebuilding a drive monthly doesnt appease me. Separately, Im curious of longevity being in boost all the time cruising at 80

I'm over here looking at stage 3 Whipple upgrades to give me 750hp and you boys are talking 1000-2000+hp numbers. I'll go be poor somewhere else now. :(

Absolutely and i agree on the earlier versions they weren’t all that too look at and before doing mine i was worried on the looks. But i think they caught on to the fact that boats are like show cars and we always like showing off the jewelry.

SCX is never gonna live above a legit 1000hp.

As far as longevity, I can't speak for other builders but Carson's motors have excellent longevity, he has a very refined valvetrain and hone/ring system. I have run other builders motors on his dyno, and his motors. The difference in the amount of crankcase breathing between other's and his quite telling. His motors seal up. Because of this, and his extreme attention to detail, his stuff lasts.

A family friend had a 26 daytona with a bowrider and I think it was an M5 procharger. He had an XZ drive on it for 10 years and never had a problem. He said it made around 1050

Hardin marine was developing some turbo kits for 500’s-525’s awhile back.. I bet they have the manifolds etc

Might want to talk to Tom Nelson to see his offerings. He once built me a killer BBC for a Chevelle.
