So the story goes...

I'd been looking for an old v-drive for a while. My neighbor Tom at the river has tons of history/roots in the old boat racing scene. He owns a killer 1978 21RC v-drive. Well one night he's telling me old boat/river stories and talking about his old 60's Schiada flatty and how he knew this guy who went for a ride in his boat and was so impressed he bought one for himself. I half jokingly said I wonder if the guy still has the boat. Tom hadn't talked to the guy in years but the next day found his number, called him up, and found out that he lives in Gardena and the boat has been sleeping in a storage unit at Badenochs for nearly 23 years. I got permission to cut the lock off and check out the boat if I promised to put a new lock on after, so I did. After almost a month of wheelin' and dealin', we came to an agreement and last week I bought the boat, drove to Parker and pulled it out of its tomb! :D I've got it back at our place now, cleaned up, and I promise top get it back on the Parker Strip where it belongs. :thumbsup

History: The boat was originally owned by a guy named Steve Ferrin who I'm told worked at Schiada. In 1970, he sold it to Brian who owned and used it in Parker, camping out mainly at Fox's, until 1987 where she went to sleep until I woke her up last week. Brian was a photographer who will be sending me old photos of the boat on the river, Sundance action shots, and camping pics. So that should be a good.:D

Here's the first shots of the resurrection...

Very nice find. Good luck with it. You should talk to Steve Harper his dad
And Chuck Schiada ran with Steve Firren back then and they would
know a lot about that boat. It was before my time but i know there was only a couple of what they called the checkerd board boats out there.
I know they used to run one in the circle races that ran pretty good.

This is going to be the easiest restoration of all time.. go through the motor, get some shit repolished.. new tires, a good wash and a coat of wax, and you officially have one of the most "legit" boats on the river!

Thanks everyone for all the awsome replys!

Before leaving Long Beach last week I scored 4 new trailer tires for $45 bucks each. Got em mounted and balanced in Parker. Right now the boat is on jack stands. I put a new impeller in, I got all the rust off the wheels and fenders(aside from some pitting they shined up nice). I've got the hubs off and the bearings out and I'm currently trying to track down these old two piece seals that apparently aren't made anymore. I'm back in LB now, next week I'm going back to siphon the old gas out and work more on the trailer. I've also gotta throw a smaller diameter steering wheel on and mount my drivers seat back further(previous owner wasn't 6'1'')...

I have a list. One thing at a time...

The Wiley Coyote thing will probably get changed. It's way nostalgic and I hate to remove it but it's not really my style.

Funny that you mention the Wiley thing. In the pic before the closeup, I was thinking, I wonder what that is, when you showed the closeup, I smiled and thought, "Way cool"! Maybe I just grew up at a different time than you but, PLEASE re-think getting rid of Wiley.

As has been said, way cool barn-find, very cool original graphics, I hope you'll leave Wiley on the nose and on the stern!

Good luck and keep us posted!

Dude !!! What a find !!! My Dad and I just completed a 2 1/2 year 1971 Schiada flatty project and absolutely love the lil flatty (we both have Schiada 21's)
DO NOT REMOVE ANYTHING PAINT OR GEL WISE !!!!!!! You have a piece of original Schiada history with the white base and checkered black, the Wiley Coyote only adds to it !!!!!
If I may suggest just having the guys over at the Schiada shop color sand and buff it out, that hull will be bad ass !!!!
What motor & v-drive setup is currently in it, I'm gonna guess a 427 BBC with Hemi v-drive box ???
Please give some more details, and don't change the hull !!!!

I can throw a rock to your place from my dad's river pad. Which is the only place we go when we go to the river. It's also where my 21 is stored. The family and I will be out July 17-20 I hope you are there I will bring my little boys over meet you and check out a piece or schiada history. I worked there for a few years and I am truely a Schiada buff. That's one more Schiada in the neighborhood. Tom's 21, Randy Wilson's 21, My 21, Dad's 22, Gary H's 21 and 22, Schiada Sheilas 21, your flatty, all in about 300 feet of river WOW!!:D

Nice Find

You guys can rest easy, I've been thinking alot about the original Wiley Coyote name and graphics. It's super nostalgic and was also done by a legend from what I understand. I've been saying since the first time I saw the boat that it would be very difficult for me to remove it considering the history. The only reason I thought about it was because I had come up with a name for a boat recently, and since this is my first and only boat I figured maybe re-name it. But I am aware of the superstition and I truly don't like the idea of undoing something special that can't be replaced. Plus it might get me a free beer at Roadrunner so long as they don't notice the Coyote is out-running the Roadrunner.:D

Mike,

Feel free to stop by and check out the boat anytime. If I'm not there my Pops can show it to you. I'm sure we'll end up seeing more Schiada's in the neighborhood. Rumor has it Randy has something sweet in the works. :D

Brian, who I purchased the boat from, tells me that it was originally a 396 block that has been pushed out with a different crank, cam, and "all kinds of tricky stuff" and that in its day was "the 3rd fastest boat on the Parker Strip"...so who knows...

It's got a Casale old style top loader and Hallcraft components.

Another bit of history: Under the seat in the boat was a 2 blade prop that Brian informed me was given to him by Ron Woodruff and was originally used in "Psychedelic". :thumbsup

I figured these old ads sort of go with the thread...

I did a little more checking on this boat , and what i know there were only three boats paintrd this way one was psychedelic witch was white and black , the other was yellow and black and the theard was yours.
Leanard did the gel and the rigging along with James Hart, of Hart Craft.
Rasi Harper did the pin stripping and the name with Chuck Schiada doing
some if the rigging . The glass work was also done by the Schiada familey.
I know Chuck Schiada would get a big kick seeing it as well as the Harper Familey. That boat is way to cool, I know i would of loved to get it.
Have fun with it. That is a real part of Schiada history.

The boat stays at our family place on the river. I should be back in Parker next week to work on the trailer some more.

Stan,

Thanks for that info on my boat! I really appreciate any info at all about these boats! Brian Goatham bought the boat 2 years old in 1970 from Steve Ferrin. He says it was built as a sister to Psychedelic, originally set up as a ski boat, and later set up more as a circle boat.

I found this thread that Harlan Orrin started on another site that shows another checkmate style in red/white called On To Glory, along with the old ads I posted earlier.

I plan on contacting Chuck Schiada. A year ago I had the opportunity of spending an afternoon at his home where he gave me an amazing history lesson/personal tour through his family photo albums and home videos. That's where I got the t-shirt in my avatar. I posted about it last year here.:thumbsup

My neighbor in Parker has a buddy whose brother still hangs out with Steve Ferrin. I'm told Ron Woodruff(Psychedelic) lives just down river from us as well. I just left a message for Chuck, I can't wait to see if/what he remembers about the Coyote.:D

I'm happy to hear your not giong to be changing the boat up. It's too classic to even mess with it. (Although IMO you could change the vinyl on the seats and get away with it.. black is too f'n hot)

I dig the old tuck n' roll but you're right, the black is gonna roast. Honestly, I don't think any other color would come close to looking as good though. So I'm probably going to be keeping some old beach towels over the seats when it's sitting out.

Do they make large Coors Original beach towels? :D

Congratulations! This is a bittersweet story. Steve Ferrin passed away Sunday, July 5, 2009. I'm sure he would be thrilled to know his boat will once again be cruising the river.

It would be wonderful if you could email the above photos to me and I will share them at his memorial.

Regards,
LHCEddie

Ryan,

When you get a chance can you post some more pics, all angles of the interior, the old Schiada flats are gonna have to hook up mid-week parker for some serious bench and cruising, seems funny that they seem to be popping up everywhere !!!!

Yep, old style Casale top loader. I think they still make parts for them.

:thumbsup Ryan,
Thanks for posting the pics, is interesting because when we got our 1971 it was setup with a 427BBC and a HEMI V-Drive box, I believe we might be the third or forth owner.

Wow, just noticed that it's a snout driven deal. That thing MUST have some circle racing history. Very Cool and thanx for changing your mind about removing the Wiley history. In one of your posts you said 'it's not your style' and I thought, 'you'd better change your style' and you did! Congrats!

Would be nice. I changed the impeller, next week I'm going to siphon the old nasty gas out, and I'm going to rebuild the carb. I've received so many different opinions on what should be done about the motor since it has sat so long. Some say have it pulled and refreshed(not in my budget), others tell me to replace the valve springs, seals and gaskets,...

That's cool to hear Dave but I don't really have any interest in selling this boat. It's worth more to me than what I payed for it. With the money I'd make from it, I'd just buy a another boat I wouldn't love nearly as much. :thumbsup

I'm told it was originally set up as a ski race version of Psychedelic and later changed to a circle boat. It isn't my style in the sense that I would name a boat Wiley Coyote, for years I've made a hobby out of coming up with funny/bitchin names for boats, but it's also not my style to take away from the history of this boat. ;)

You might just do a compression check after changing out the oil & filter, fuel filter if it has one, and like you said drain the nasty fuel, give it some fresh 91 and it'll probably fire !! Is the oil filter the old style can or regular filter?
There is one place we found in Havi that will strip & paint a boat trailer at a good price and do a very nice job if you are thinking of refinishing the trailer, they did our for around $1100.
If you decide to throw some new fenders, check with Fenders-n- More, Pacomia, Ca, best prices and they supply most of the trailer mfgs, they also do them in s.s.

No worries.. :) Call Stan and ask him any questions ya want, he'll tell ya which way to go. Obnoxious wouldn't be a bad guy to talk to either about what you should do with the motor, now that it has sat that long.

Just my two cents but you might want to pull the distributor and pre-oil that thing before turning it over with the starter. Could save you having to freshen the motor. If it hooks a bearing from lack of oil you won't be happy. I would like to have one of those old schiada flattys too. When Steve Harper worked with me at Schiada he was looking for the old molds to build a new original Schiada flat. I would have built one too if we ever found molds. That thing looks so nice and well preserved after your elbow grease.

Our first boat was a '70 Sidewinder with black tuck and roll. What were those guys thinking???

Great find. Make sure you keep us posted on it's progress and I hope to see it out there soon. (Especially because I haven't been in a while LOL)
