Kids that age should be all about a BMX bike. He'll not only have a much better bike, he'll have more fun and (this is the biggie) he'll learn better skills. Get him one that is stout enough to ride at the skate parks and he'll be set.

X3 on the bmx route, i recommend DK Bikes, S&M cycles, Chromoly frame is a must, nice 48 spline 3 piece cranks, sealed bearing hubs and good double wall rims, aluminum bikes are great for the race track, but won't hold up to big jumping, skate parks, or street riding.....
or like cig said, a jumper is a bitchin bike, i have a 26" single speed DK jumper that i changed from the straight bars to a bmx cruiser bar (pretty much making it into a 26" bmx cruiser to fit my 6'3" ass) super nice bike, came with all the bitchin stuff, sun rims, good disk brake, Marzocchi (sp?) dirt jump gas spring forks.
