I have capped several boats and I do a similar process but I add a layer that goes first using Vette Bond on the first layer use the "old style" comes in two types. The Vette Bond gets into the crack deeply and won't crack or ever come out I then fair and add Bi-Directional in 2 or 3 layers this gives you great strength and rigidity and won't crack. I have used the Vette Bond as a fix on Transom cracks as well it is a lot stronger than glass and won't crack. It is a good way to do a fix till you have time to fix right.

I have always heard stories of "capped" boats cracking, but honestly I"ve never seen one crack.. LOL I think some people that didn't know how to do caps, probably had some failures, but the guys that are reputable and know what they are doing, don't have much if any issues.

This is why they charge extra for capping. Every new boat that is built that wants a cap is done like this. You take the the top and bottom and put them together and then start the cap process after.

I have seen several break from a couple different shops, seems like the smaller boats with caps dont crack as much as the larger ones? Also seems with the bigger boats how much hp and how hard the boat is used seems to have something to do with it too.

Stblaze, you don't get much nicer than that. Does the color come from paint or in the gelcoat? Thanks :D
It's gel.

i have seen several 21's crack. keep in mind, these were ski race boats that were beat on constantly. not saying i wouldnt do it, I would, just that its not unheard of.

This looks awesome. I was wondering how the process worked for capping a boat. I would love to go see the entire build process of a boat. I wonder if Bob Leach would let me hang out at his shop everyday for a few weeks so I could learn.

I think he would, and it's just up the road a bit from you.

Now,if you went in and wrote a check for a new boat there's no question he would let you camp out all day every day while your unit is being built:D
